Kiko has re-intensified to a category 5 hurricane on its approach to the Central Pacific basin. According to a NHC forecast discussion: Kiko is forecast to approach the Hawaiian Islands during the early to the middle portion of next week. “Impacts from rain and wind remain a possibility, but it is too soon to determine the exact location or magnitude of these impacts, and interests there should continue to monitor the progress of this storm.”

Kiko has strengthened to a major Category 4 hurricane as it moves west about 1,600 miles east of Hilo.

Forecasters with NOAA’s Central Pacific Hurricane Center and Climate Prediction Center today said the outlook calls for 1 to 4 tropical cyclones across the central Pacific this season.

Research from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa revealed that intense tropical cyclones, equivalent to category 4 and 5 hurricanes, are arriving three to four days earlier with each decade of climate change.

Even while weakening, Dora is expected to remain a hurricane through the entire 5-day forecast period, according to forecasters with the National Hurricane Center. The National Weather Service advises that “while it should continue to be monitored, guidance shows Dora passing south of the islands.”  Forecasters with the NWS are anticipating limited showers with trade winds becoming strong and gusty on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service reports that Calvin will likely impact the state beginning next Tuesday, with the potential for windy and wet weather mid week. Hawaiʻi’s synopsis indicates that it’s still too early to forecast details.

Hawaiian Electric crews on Maui have been working to bolster the island’s resilience against severe weather-related events through a series of ongoing initiatives.

As Hawaiʻi heads into another hurricane season, the American Red Cross is urging the public to prepare in advance.

Felicia is expected to move into the Central Pacific Hurricane Center area of responsibility next Wednesday as a tropical storm.

With the start of hurricane season on June 1 in the Central Pacific, the Democratic Party of Hawaiʻi is calling attention to the need for most federal investments in hurricane preparedness and resiliency. These investments are critically important considering the National Weather Service’s recent announcement that they expect two to five storms in the Central Pacific during the 2021 hurricane season.

The study suggests that global warming will intensify landfalling tropical cyclones of a category three or higher in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, while suppressing the formation of weaker events.

During port condition WHISKEY, gale force winds of 39 mph are predicted to arrive within 72 hours. Ports status are open to all commercial and recreational traffic.

Forecasters continue to monitor Hurricane Kiko in the Eastern Pacific. At 11 a.m. HST, the center of Hurricane Kiko was located about 1,000 miles WSW of the southern tip of Baja California.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center and National Hurricane Center continue to track two systems that are on weakening trends.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is informing the public of preparations it is taking in advance of possible weather impacts as Tropical Storm Erick passes south of the state and Tropical Storm Flossie approaches

This is a list of closures, cancellations and notices issued as businesses, groups and facilities deal with the inclement weather and approaching storms.  This list is updated regularly.

Maui County officials continue to prepare for possible heavy weather impacts from tropical cyclones Erick and Flossie and are reminding residents and visitors to prepare their households.

On the forecast track, the center of Erick will pass within about 200 miles south of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi later today and tonight.
