Maui teams delivered strong performances at the 2025 Hawaiʻi Elementary and Middle School VEX IQ Robotics Regional Championships, held Feb. 15-16, with several teams earning top awards and positioning themselves for potential advancement to the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas.

Hawai‘i REALTORS has announced its 2024 Fair Housing Keiki Art Contest winners. The annual contest is designed to help children learn about fair housing. Students from Kīhei Elementary and ʻĪao Intermediate were among the winners.

The Maui Mayor’s Office of Innovation & Sustainability is partnering with ʻĪao Intermediate School to continue climate justice education and youth participation in public policy.  More than 150 students will march to Kalana O Maui this morning to share their research in the Maui County Council Chambers regarding sustainability, resilience and human rights. 

Two teen girls were arrested on Tuesday afternoon following an investigation into an alleged threat at ʻĪao Intermediate School.

ʻĪao Intermediate School eighth graders, who work at their school’s student-operated credit union, took their learning off-campus this week when they traveled to Oʻahu for a day visit. The group of 11 students visited HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union (HawaiiUSA) to get a glimpse of how the business operates, and to meet its executive team.

To learn about entrepreneurial ideas from Maui’s youth to improve the island’s future, the Maui Chamber of Commerce is presenting the 2020 winners of the County Council’s ʻImi Pono Challenge via Zoom on June 1 from 5:30 to 7 pm.

CIP highlights for Maui include: $3 million for plans and designs of a new middle school in Central Maui; $500,000 for perimeter fence at ʻĪao Intermediate School; $9 million for Lealiʻi parkways and highways improvements; $11 million for Kāʻanapali Beach Restoration and Berm Enhancement; $3 million for a ferry pier at Lahaina Boat Harbor; $4 million for improvements Waiʻanapanapa State Park in East Maui; $5 million for the Maui Regional Public Safety Complex; and $40 million for the widening of Puʻunēnē Avenue from Kamehameha Avenue to Kūihelani Highway.

Officers were told that a threat was written on a bathroom stall to force the school on lockdown in order to avoid going to the last class of the day. 

Police have lifted the “shelter in place” that was in effect earlier at ʻĪao Intermediate School.  The action was taken at around 12:03 p.m., and lifted at 12:31 p.m.  Police have not yet released details about the reason for the shelter, which is a term used to describe a type of “lockdown” situation.

Maui police are investigating an incident involving a threat against ʻĪao Intermediate School by a student in the form of written graffiti in a bathroom.  Word of the incident also prompted a separate report in which a student reportedly brought a firearm on school grounds late last year.
