A minute-by-minute timeline assembled by fire investigators provides a chilling, detailed account of how a grassland fire reported at 2:55 p.m. Aug. 8, mauka of the Lahaina Bypass and Kelawea Mauka Makai Park, rapidly grew into a monster, devouring everything in its path.

The standards are aimed at providing mauka to makai streamflow for native stream animals and traditional and customary practices at Kahoma and Kanahā streams.

The Maui County Council’s Land Use Committee meeting relating to the proposed fast-track affordable housing project at Kahoma Village is scheduled to reconvene on Friday.

The project is proposed for construction on 21.6 acres of land, situated makai of the Honoapiʻilani Highway, and bordered by Front street to the west. It is also situated between Kenui Street to the south and the Kahoma Stream and the Lahaina Cannery Mall to the north.

State officials say the “inverted tier arch design” was utilized to minimize the obstruction to ocean views. The $24.3 million Kahoma Stream Bridge project will now be included for consideration in a national competition.

The project site is currently vacant, but had been used recently as an informal homeless camp.
