#Launiupoko Beach Park

A record 277 young surfers competed at the 31st annual Pohai Na Keiki Nalu on Saturday at Launiupoko Beach Park, where Kodo Fujimoto delivered the highest-scoring performance in all finals to claim the boys 12–13 shortboard title.

Highway users are advised to prepare for potential traffic delays on Sunday, Jan. 19, as the Maui Oceanfront Marathon will proceed from the Shops at Wailea to Launiupoko Beach Park.

The County of Maui was recently awarded a $15.43 million grant from the federal government to support the first phase of the West Maui Greenway, a project that will contribute to several key areas of Lahaina’s recovery from the 2023 Maui wildfires.

At the end of a nearly four-mile walk, community organizer Archie Kalepa addressed a crowd gathered at Launiupoko saying, “The depth of our grief and the warmth of our aloha is overwhelming. Today marks a different kind of point in the history of this place.”

Prayer, ʻoli (chanting) and protocol were practiced during the Lele Aloha Hoʻūlu Lahaina Unity Walk held Saturday morning in West Maui. “We need to come together all of Hawaiʻi. We have the opportunity to rebuild Lahaina in a pono way,” said Kalepa. “Lahaina will take the lead but we need everyone’s support.”

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation advises the traveling public to be aware of pedestrians walking along the Lahaina Bypass (Route 3000) and Honoapi‘ilani Highway (Route 30) on Saturday morning, Jan. 20, 2024. The Lele Aloha Hoʻūlu Lahaina Unity Gathering will host a Unity Walk beginning at 8 a.m. along the Lahaina Bypass, south of the Lahainaluna Road underpass. 

The Maui Oceanfront Marathon, which includes a 5K, Mom’s 6-miler and half-marathon, is back for its 16th running on Jan. 14 with new race courses.

Eight staff in the Parks department lost their homes to the fire, but worked to ensure the beach park could reopen so families could enjoy it over the weekend.

Public restrooms and showers at Launiupoko Beach Park are closed pending needed repairs due to a main waterline break.

The parking lots at Launiupoko Beach Park will be closed from Oct. 7 to Oct. 18 for construction. 

Proceeds from the event will benefit the Mauli Ola Foundation, dedicated to providing hope and confidence to individuals living with genetic diseases.

The students were able to experience canoe surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, surf lessons and mermaid swimming lessons
