Makawao Elementary physical education teacher, Troy “Leven” Abshire Jr., and King Kamehameha III Elementary kindergarten teacher Robert Livermore were recognized as the 2027 Teachers of the Year for respective complex areas in Maui County. From among the 16 honorees statewide, one will be selected as the 2027 Hawai‘i State Teacher of the Year, HIDOE’s highest teaching honor.

Maui Ocean Center will present the 15th annual Maui 5K from 7 to 9 a.m. Sunday, March 1. Online registration, including new youth rates for ages 5 to 17, ends Feb. 26.

Leanne Dunn, educator of Makawao Elementary School on Maui, was among the 25 Hawai‘i educators from throughout the state who were recognized for their completion of the rigorous certification program of the National Board Certified Teacher. With the latest cohort of newly certified teachers, there are now 539 in Hawai‘i who hold this designation.

For Earth Week 2022, nonprofit Grow Some Good partnered with students and teachers of Makawao Elementary to plant more than 150 native plants that were gifted by ReTree Hawai’i.

The Hawai‘i State Department of Education celebrated 40 educators statewide who have earned or renewed their National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Certification – a recognition for meeting the highest standards for teaching – on Monday, April 19, 2021.

A total of 89 grants were distributed to public school teachers across Oʻahu, Maui, Lānaʻi and Hawaiʻi Island to help purchase classroom supplies and enhance student curriculums.

Thanks to the donations from customers, Pukalani Superette made donations totaling $3,507 to four of Maui’s elementary Schools and to Maui’s Women Helping Women

Na Keiki No‘eau is a visual arts education program that sends Hui teaching artists off-site and into A+ After School programs in Maui County.

Maui representatives secured about $382 million in CIP funding for projects across Maui County, including funds for Maui County schools, airports and harbors.
