Mahi Pono is bringing fresh flavors and big news to this year’s Maui AgFest with the debut of its new Maui-grown coffee, produced in collaboration with Hawaiʻi’s iconic Lion Coffee, and the official launch of its popular summer watermelon season. Both will be featured at the festival this Saturday, May 31, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the War Memorial Complex in Wailuku.

Minit Stop announced its new bean-to-cup coffee service available starting May 1 at its 18 locations across Maui and Hawaiʻi Island.  Customers can enjoy the superior taste of two island blend brews roasted exclusively for Minit Stop by Maui Coffee Roasters.

Chairperson Sharon Hurd said the Hawaiʻi State Department of Agriculture is investigating a complaint by Maui coffee farmer Gerry Ross that big company Mahi Pono was able to obtain coffee leaf rust-resistant cultivars that small companies could not.

The state is restricting the movement of coffee from Maui and Hawaiʻi Island after infestations of coffee leaf rust were discovered on both islands.  An interim rule, established by the Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture, Plant Quarantine Branch went into effect on Friday, Nov. 20, 2020.

The coffee leaf rust pest was tentatively identified on coffee plant samples collected on Maui. The Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture received preliminary results from University of Hawaiʻi, College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources identifying the fungus on plants collected from managed and wild coffee in the Haʻikū area.
