Multiple award-winning Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka o Uka, under the direction of Kumu Hula Nāpua Silva, brings this year to a close with an inspirational performance “Hanau Ke Ali’i, A King Is Born.”

Kahiko night at the Merrie Monarch Festival featured hula in the ancient style with 29 groups performing Friday night in the annual competition in Hilo, Hawaiʻi. The festival continues tonight with ʻauana or modern hula, followed by results from the 61st event.

Ka Lā ‘Ōnohi Mai O Ha‘eha‘e under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Tracie & Keawe Lopes of Oʻahu took the overall title at the 60th Annual Merrie Monarch Festival, in Hilo Hawaiʻi. From Maui, the seven men of Hālau Kekuaokalā‘au‘ala‘iliahi, under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Haunani & ʻIliahi Paredes of Wailuku, took first place honors in the kāne kahiko and earned 4th place in the kāne ʻauana division. Their combined effort earned them the Overall Kāne title for the second year in a row. From Maui, the seven men of Hālau Kekuaokalā‘au‘ala‘iliahi, under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula Haunani & ʻIliahi Paredes of Wailuku, took first place honors in the kāne kahiko and earned 4th place in the kāne ʻauana division. After months of developing rigorous safety guidelines and a television broadcast plan that will allow for a virtual audience experience, the Merrie Monarch Festival announced that the hula competition will be held this summer.

The Maui Arts and Cultural Center hosts “Live @ the MACC,” a live streaming event this Saturday, Dec. 19, starting at 7:30 p.m., featuring Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi.

Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi will be hosting a special concert of hula and mele (song) at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center on Jan. 12. 

The winners have been announced for the 14th Annual Kū Mai Ka Hula Competition, held on Saturday, Sept. 14 in the Castle Theater at Maui Arts & Cultural Center.

This year’s annual Kū Mai Ka Hula (“Hula Appears”) competition on Maui features award-winning hālau hula from Hawai‘i, the US mainland and Japan.

Maui’s Hālau Kekuaokalā‘au‘ala‘iliahi walked off with 1st place finishes for their Kaikamahine ‘Auana and Keiki Kāne Kahiko performances, as well as taking the Wendell Kalanikapuaenui Silva Overall Perpetual Trophy for their Keiki Kane.

Family and friends greeted Maui’s award-winning Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka with an oli (chant) and lei as the arrived at Kahului Airport on Sunday. 

The competition portion of the 55th Annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival kicks off Thursday night at the Edith Kanakaʻole Stadium in Hilo, Hawaiʻi.

Winners were announced after the 12th Annual Kū Mai Ka Hula was held over the weekend at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater.

Na Kumu Hula Kahulu Maluo and Hālau Kamaluokaleihulu will perform at Maui Made Sundays on Sunday, Sept. 3

Invited Na Kuma Hula and their hālau will perform at QKC as an encore to the 12th annual competition.

The Shops at Wailea welcomes kumu hula, Nāpua Greig and 30 dancers from Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka, for a special holiday performance for Concerts at The Shops on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2016 at 5:30 p.m.

Nā Mele o Hawaiʻi: The Golden Years featuring multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano award winner, kumu hula and recording artist Uluwehi Guerrero and his Hālau Hula Kauluokalā, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2016 at 7:30 p.m. at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater.

The 53rd Annual Merrie Monarch Hula Festival concluded early this morning, with Hālau Nā Mamo O Puʻuanahulu, under the direction of Nā Kumu Hula William Kahakuleilehua “Sonny” Ching and Lōpaka Igarta-De Vera taking the overall title.

Tonight, there are a total of 29 performances, with Maui hālau scheduled to appear throughout the lineup in the following order: (1) Pukalani Hula Hale – Kumu Hiʻilei Maxwell-Juan – Pukalani & Kahului, Maui; (2) Hālau o Ka Hanu Lehua – Kumu Kamaka Kukona – Waikapū, Maui; (4) Moana’s Hula Hālau – Kumu Raquel Dudoit – Kaunakakai, Molokaʻi; (11) Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi – Kumu Haunani & ʻIliahi Paredes – Wailuku, Maui; (17) Hālau Kekuaokalāʻauʻalaʻiliahi – Kumu Haunani & ʻIliahi Paredes – Wailuku, Maui (Kāne); and (27) Hālau Nā Lei Kaumaka O Uka – Kumu Nāpua Greig – Kula, Maui.

Kumu Hula, Iola Balubar of Maui celebrates the 40th Anniversary of her Hālau Hula O Keola Aliʻi O Ke Kai at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 27, at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center’s Castle Theater.
