When Maui resident Donna Domingo started as a cashier at the Maui Lu in Kīhei in the late 1970s, she never thought that one day, she would rise to become the first female president of the Hawaiʻi ILWU Local 142 with 18,000 members statewide, then including longshoremen, hotel workers, and pineapple, sugar, and general trade employees.

North-bound traffic on South Kīhei Road will be detoured on a portion of South Kīhei Road – between Ohukai Road and Kaonoulu Street – from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 10-14, 2022, according to the Department of Public Works Highways Division.

Hilton Grand Vacations Inc. announced the soft opening of its brand-new oceanfront  property, Maui Bay Villas by Hilton Grand Vacations in Kīhei. Located on Maui’s southwest coast, the all-suite luxury resort marks HGV’s first location on the island and 10th property in Hawaiʻi.

The Mustang crashed through construction fencing at the old Maui Lu site, and continued out of control, rolling over and coming to rest upside down, landing 15 feet atop a pile of lumber.  A 38-year-old Wailuku man was arrested for negligent homicide, driving under the influence and excessive speeding after fleeing the scene of a fatal motor vehicle crash in Kīhei early this morning.

Hilton Grand Vacations has started construction at the Maui Bay Villas, with work on the first phase slated for completion in the first quarter of 2021.  

We received reports of flooding near the Kīhei Bay Vista property as well as the wetland area just south of the old Maui Lu property in North Kīhei.

Demolition got underway this month at the old Maui Lu Resort in South Maui, with the iconic longhouse and church building coming down in the process.

We shall miss our old friend dearly, and so should all who visited or live on Maui, for the Maui Lu was one of the few living links to old Hawaiʻi, and whenever these disappear a tear or two need be shed, as they can never be replaced.

The Japan-based Capbridge Group is collaborating with Hilton Grand Vacations to conduct a $300 million redevelopment of the property into a 388 unit timeshare resort, that is scheduled to break ground in late 2015.
