#Maui Waena Intermediate School

The Hawai‘i Education Association recently awarded scholarships to three Maui educators: Arica Lynn, Erin Rodrigues and Stephanie Keseday.

Representing Hawaiʻi against hundreds of teams from across the nation, the Maui Waena middle school media students captured two first-place awards in the Feature Story and Music Video categories. The team also earned honorable mentions in additional categories.  

With the title, the Aloha Volleyball Association’s Under-14 boys team qualifies for a spot in the AAU national tournament in July in Florida.

E-bikes have grown in popularity across the country, and the risks have gone up to as more people adopt them. Maui Waena barred them on campus last year, and other schools have since followed suit.

A chance meeting of the Arizona Diamondbacks CEO while playing at the Hula Grill in Kā‘anapali in 2009 has led to Derek Sebastian performing the Star-Spangled Banner before seven Major League Baseball games.

The team has won all 10 of its games this summer, at the state and West Region levels, to qualify for the 2025 Intermediate 50/70 World Series in Livermore, Calif., that began Sunday. Central East Maui received a bye and will open play today 1 p.m. HST in the event that runs through Aug. 3.

The Just Hoop Maui camp drew 115 youths from the Mainland and Maui for a three-day run at Jon Garcia Gym at Baldwin High School. The camp coaches included Greg Oden, the No. 1 NBA draft pick in 2007 by the Portland Trail Blazers.

The annual celebration—believed to be the longest-running Filipino fiesta in the United States—was first held in 1970.

Maui Waena Intermediate School Principal Jacquelyn McCandless and Kaimukī High School Principal Lorelei Aiwohi have been named the state’s 2025 National Distinguished Principals of the Year by the Hawai‘i Association of Secondary School Administrators (HASSA). Maui teams delivered strong performances at the 2025 Hawaiʻi Elementary and Middle School VEX IQ Robotics Regional Championships, held Feb. 15-16, with several teams earning top awards and positioning themselves for potential advancement to the VEX Robotics World Championship in Dallas, Texas.

The Pukalani Elementary School STEM Imagineers team won the Energy Award while the Kaunakakai Elementary School Molokai All Stars team won the Sportsmanship Award at the 2024 Hawaiʻi Elementary and Middle School VEX IQ Robotics Championships held earlier this month on Oʻahu.

Maui Waena and Kalama intermediate school students advanced to the state championships with the highest-scoring robot performances.

Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului has among the largest middle school enrollment in the state with 1,044 students. Kīhei Charter School has the third largest charter school enrollment in Hawaiʻi with 693 students.

Devika Sewpaul, a 7th grade social studies teacher at Maui Waena Intermediate School, was one of 15 public school educators selected for the 2022-24 Hawaiʻi State Teacher Fellows.

Maui County hosts its first dynamic job fair event featuring virtual meetings at its “LIVE” virtual job fair and an in-person drive-thru job fair at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College on Tuesday, April 20. Job seekers and students will need to explore the entire schedule and decide if they want to attend virtually or in-person and connect with employers directly.

American Savings Bank launched the bi-annual contest in 2015. This year, ASB received more than 300 entries from 33 schools statewide. 

All proceeds to benefit the Maui Waena STEMworks program.

National “E” Coaching Course is being offered to all competitive soccer coaches U13 and above here on Maui, from Dec. 12-14, at Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului.

Maui teacher Richard Arase was selected as Maui District Teacher of the Year, and is one of seven teachers being considered for the 2015 State Teacher of the Year honor.
