#Maui Waena Intermediate

The Kahului SONIC team has earned a spot among the Top 12 in the nation out of more than 3,100 teams and will compete in the final round of the Dr Pepper SONIC Games competition in Nashville on Oct. 5 — an exciting first-time Mainland experience for many of the team members. 

After diverting nearly 2,000 pounds of textile waste from the landfill last year, The Sewing Hui, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to sewing for the Maui community, is expanding its efforts this year with new educational programs, deeper sustainability goals, and a growing island-wide impact.

Two classmates from Maui Waena Intermediate took first and second place in the Grades 5–8 art category.

This year’s Hawaiʻi STEM Conference, organized by Maui Economic Development Board’s (MEDB) STEMworks program, welcomed almost 600 attendees, including over 70 teachers and 300 students in grades 6-12 from all across the state.

The four Lahainaluna Complex schools on Maui impacted by the Aug. 8 wildfires saw a combined enrollment decrease of 585 students compared to the previous school year while other Maui schools saw enrollment increases due to this fluctuation of displaced students.

Baldwin High School, Maui Waena Intermediate, and Waiheʻe and Wailuku Elementary schools are included on the list of places where CIP project funding was distributed in recent months. There’s also funds for Kahului Airport runway resurfacing and improvements and roadway improvements at the Consolidated Rental Car Facility.

Waiākea High School and Maui Waena Intermediate bested some 50 other schools and won the top prizes at the 19th Annual ‘Ōlelo Youth Xchange Student Video Competition Awards Gala last week.

Maui schools earned 20 finalist spots in the 19th Annual ‘Ōlelo Youth Xchange Student Video Competition. The award recipients were selected from hundreds of submissions from keiki in 50 schools across the state.

Maui High School was the fifth largest in the state with 2,082 students; Maui Waena is the fifth largest intermediate school in the state with 1,162 students; Kahului is the fourth largest elementary school with 933 students and Kīhei Charter School is the fifth largest charter school in the state with 689 students.

The Maui Police Department is warning the public about an alleged attempted kidnapping that occurred near Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului.

The House approved $31.2 million for capital improvement projects for Central Maui including funds for: Kahului Elementary, Maui Waena, Kahului Airport, and Kahului Harbor.
