Two people died as a result of a rollover accident involving a Polaris utility terrain vehicle (UTV) near Hālawa Valley Park on Molokaʻi, Saturday. The incident occurred on at around 10:57 p.m. on Aug. 8, 2026, on Kamehameha V Highway near Mile 28.

A motor vehicle collision on the Kūihelani Highway Thursday morning claimed the life of a 27-year-old Kahului man. The victim has since been identified as Victor Harris.

Preliminary data shows that speed contributed to nearly half of the 16 fatal crashes, impairment is suspected in several cases — and two lives could possibly have been saved by use of a seatbelt or helmet. With six pedestrians, one motorcycle rider and one ATV rider among the victims, HDOT is stressing continued vigilance and safer choices.

Sen. Stanley Chang (D 9 – Hawai‘i Kai, Kuli‘ou‘ou, Niu, ʻĀina Haina, Waiʻalae-Kāhala, Diamond Head, Kaimukī, Kapahulu) announced the signing of Senate Bill 30 into law as Act 222, which now requires moped drivers to wear a safety helmet and prohibits people under the age of 16 from driving a moped. The law became effective on June 25, 2025. 

“Every year we start with zero traffic fatalities but that doesn’t mean the pain and loss of those dying in avoidable crashes the previous year goes away,” said Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation is providing year-to-date traffic fatality statistics for 2023 as it continues to promote responsible driving habits to keep roads safe. As of Dec. 13, 2023, 92 fatalities caused by motor vehicle collisions were reported statewide. While there has been improvement in overall driving behavior, the number of fatalities by motorcycle collisions has been consistently high for multiple years.

Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation launches a Speeding Catches Up With You campaign today, in an effort to reduce speeding and vehicle deaths.  “Regardless of the identified cause of a traffic crash, the cause of a traffic fatality is always speed,” said Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen. “Excessive speed reduces reaction time and increases lethality of impacts. Lets stop speeding and reduce the number of people who die senselessly on our highways. 

Governor Josh Green signed seven bills into law on Thursday, aimed at increasing safety on Hawaiʻi’s roadways.  One of the bills allows driver license renewal online and by mail, and takes effect in two years on July 1, 2025. Another bill establishes a Safe Routes to School Advisory Committee. State officials say Hawaii had 117 traffic fatalities and nearly 600 serious or paralyzing injuries on its roadways last year.

A 68-year-old Kahului man suffered fatal injuries in a motor vehicle crash Tuesday morning in Central Maui near Kahului Harbor.

In Hawaiʻi, there were 527 traffic-related deaths from 2017-2021. From January through June 2022, there were 60 fatalities statewide, compared to 46 during the same period in 2021.

The Honoapiilani Highway was temporarily closed this morning while crews worked to remove a pickup truck that had gone over the cliff side in a deadly head-on accident reported on Monday afternoon.

A 66-year-old Kahului man suffered fatal injuries in a head-on traffic accident on the Honoapiʻilani Highway on Monday afternoon.

A 64-year-old Kula man suffered fatal injuries in a weekend crash on the Kahului Airport Access Road at the intersection of Hāna Highway in Kahului.

An 83 year old Wailuku man suffered fatal injuries in a two car accident near the Kahului boat ramp on Tuesday.  Authorities say Katsuto E.
