In response to the devastating 2023 wildfires, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos have donated $1.5 million to support Lahainaluna High School students, along with an additional $2 million to fund research aimed at mitigating future wildfire risk through vegetation management. The gift builds on an earlier generous donation from the Bezos Earth Fund to the East Maui Watershed Partnership.

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Athletics Department successfully concluded its annual Giving Week, raising nearly $1.34 million from more than 1,200 donors from Sept. 6-16. A notable contribution of $1 million was directed specifically to support nursing students at UH Maui College, building on a $2 million gift in 2024.

The 24-hour campaign drew over 1,800 gifts to benefit students, faculty and programs across the 10-campus UH System.

Giving in FY24 included nearly $10 million for programs to benefit relief and recovery from the August 2023 wildfires on Maui, including $1 million from the Stupski Foundation that issued immediate cash payments to UH students within a week of the fires.

Local assistance will be available during the public schools spring break for families seeking help with applications for federal financial aid for students entering or attending college.

This Giving Tuesday, UH Foundation stands with Maui and is devoting 100% of fundraising efforts to helping the UH ‘ohana bolster Maui’s recovery following the Aug. 8 wildfires.

Thursday mornings are particularly busy—and rewarding—for the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College’s culinary arts program purchasing class. Instructor Natasha Joslin and her seven students, along with some campus and community volunteers, pack up 200 boxes of local produce that are distributed later in the day to UH Maui College students and community members affected by the August wildfires. 

In recognition of his $5 million donation, the new Residences for Innovative Student Entrepreneurs at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa will be renamed the Walter Dods Jr. RISE Center.

UH Foundation has set up several funds to benefit students, faculty and staff, and another to support the meals being made at Maui College for evacuees and first responders.

The team will digitize and catalog more than 55,000 plant specimens, many of which are extinct, to preserve and improve access worldwide to one of the oldest collections of Pacific plants.

For a third consecutive year, the Wailea Community Association is providing monetary support to the University of Hawaiʻi Maui Campus nursing program, in hopes of increasing healthcare resources in the Maui community.

American Savings Bank announced its charitable contributions for the 2021 calendar year totaled more than $1.5 million. The funds were donated to the community, benefiting nearly 80 local nonprofit organizations, according to a company announcement.
