A new report from the Carnegie Foundation highlights how UH schools are expanding access to higher education—and helping students succeed after graduation.

Kamakanoweo Kekauoha-Schultz was selected after advancing through local and statewide interviews representing the Rotary Club of Upcountry Maui.

At the urging of University of Hawaiʻi President Wendy Hensel, the UH Foundation is working to raise private donations to support graduate students whose funding has been interrupted due to recent federal executive orders.

This week, the Hōʻola One prototype, a beach-sand cleaning machine, moved from Hawaiʻi Island to Oʻahu, courtesy of a Young Brothers’ Community Shipping Program award to Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund.

The Maui Nui Marine Resource Council will host its first quarterly “Know Your Ocean Speaker Series” on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025 featuring Dr. John Burns of the Multiscale Environmental Graphical Analysis Lab at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom.

The word mākia was selected as the 2024 Huaʻōlelo (Word) of the Year by the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Ka Haka ʻUla o Keʻelikōlani, College of Hawaiian Language (KHʻUOK). The word, meaning “aim, motto, or purpose,” inspires resilience in these transformative times, and a serves as a powerful reminder to move forward with intention and clarity.

Seventh- through 11th grade Hawaiian immersion haumāna (students) from Maui, Oʻahu Hawaiʻi Island and Nā Pua Noʻeau have returned from a free five-day huakaʻi (trip) to California to help promote interactive STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) pathway options within higher education.

Gov. Josh Green, M.D., today signed 13 pieces of legislation into law, marking a renewed commitment for Hawaiʻi’s Department of Hawaiian Homelands (DHHL), Native Hawaiian education, cultural practices and traditions, and stewardship.

The University of Hawaiʻi and State of Hawaiʻi have committed $5 million in the 2024-25 Hawaiʻi Promise Scholarship fund to help prospective and current UH Community College students afford and access higher education.

Wenaokeao, meaning “earliest glow of light,” is the name given to the SPIRou spectrograph and ESPaDOnS, which are used to observe the colors of light emitting from stars.

In a multi-agency effort, treatments, inspections and surveillance continue on Maui for coconut rhinoceros beetles (CRB). To date, no CRB have been confirmed on Maui since an initial detection of 17 live CRB larvae in one palm tree in Kīhei in November 2023. One dead CRB adult was found at a Maui retail store in September 2023. 

The University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo will begin the removal of the Hōkū Keʻa Observatory on the summit of Maunakea the week of April 15, 2024. The decommissioning process that includes the restoration of the site is expected to be completed by August.

Hawaiʻi is one of only eight states to have outperformed the national average in terms of its students earning their bachelor’s degree after transferring from a community college.

The University of Hawaiʻi is in the initial stages of establishing a space engineering and instrument development center at the UH Institute for Astronomy’s facilities on the UH Hilo campus, thanks to general fund support from the Hawaiʻi State Legislature and Hawaiʻi Gov. Josh Green.

The Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes is holding its annual summer International Training Course in Volcano Hazards Monitoring. This year is the 30th course since its inception in 1990 after a three-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic. 

Maui’s Jacelyn Lau of Pukalani has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from California Water Service Group.

The life and legacy of legendary educator and cultural icon Edith Kanakaʻole will be celebrated on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo.

The decommissioning of Hōkū Kea is tentatively scheduled to begin in late 2023 and take about five months to complete.  Hōkū Kea is the second telescope on Maunakea now in the final phase of the extensive decommissioning process required under the Mauna Kea Comprehensive Management Plan.

The University of Hawaiʻi reports that silversword seeds first sown at the CMS greenhouse at the Halepōhaku mid-level facility in February 2022 sprouted into more than 100 seedlings under the care of CMS staff and are currently 3-7 inches tall. Plans are to outplant the silversword in a fenced enclosure within the Maunakea Forest Reserve.
