There were 206,049 visitors to Maui in March 2024, down significantly compared to 276,485 visitors (-25.5%) in March 2023 and 271,934 visitors (-24.2%) in March 2019, according to preliminary data from the state Department of Business Economic Development and Tourism.

“The impact of the Maui wildfires continues to be felt in November’s figures, but with most of West Maui now reopened to tourism, there is a concerted effort to reinvigorate job opportunities and facilitate the economic recovery of Maui,” said DBEDT Director James Kunane Tokioka.

Both visitor arrivals and visitor spending declined for the third straight month compared to 2022, as Hawaiʻi’s visitor industry continued to feel the impact of the August Lahaina wildfires, according to preliminary statistics from the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

The State Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism released its September 2023 visitor statistics report on Monday, demonstrating the continuing impacts of the Maui wildfires.

The impacts from the Maui wildfires were significant in September 2023 with both visitor arrivals and visitor expenditures down by more than 50% for Maui for the month compared to 2022.

Visitor spending on Maui was $619.4 million in June 2023, compared to $549.8 million in June 2022 (+12.7%) and $477.1 million (+29.8%) in June 2019.

Tourism continued to recover across the state in February, with Maui County reporting double digit increases in visitors and spending over the same time last year.

There were 228,743 visitors to Maui in January 2023, up nearly 25% from the 183,278 visitors who arrived in January 2022, and down -2% from the 233,422 visitors who came in January 2019.

Visitor arrivals on Maui have recovered to near pre-pandemic levels, with July 2022 arrivals coming in at -1% from 2019.

There were 5 percent more tourists on Maui this past July compared to a year ago. 

Visitors to the island of Maui spent a total of $364.6 million in November, according to preliminary statistics from the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority.

Visitor Spending Generated $1.69 Billion in January 2018, the Highest Monthly Total in Hawaiʻi’s History

Year-to-date on Maui, visitor spending ($4.27 billion) and arrivals (2,483,686) surpassed the totals covering the same timeframe in 2016.

Through October 2016, visitor arrivals for Maui were up +4.2% and visitor spending year-to-date grew on Maui by 9.6% to $3.7 million.

On Maui Island, visitor spending rose by 6.1 percent to $438.5 million in January 2015, compared with $413.3 million in January 2014. Visitor arrivals were counted at 211,032, increasing by 6.8 percent and including a 12.1 percent increase in day-trip visitors over last year. The average stay for visitors was tallied at 9.52 days, down slightly from January 2014.

On Maui, higher daily spending in July of 2014 (up 10.3% to $206 per person) among the 225,727 visitors (up 0.2%) to Maui contributed to an 8.2% gain in visitor expenditures to $365.8 million.

Per person per day spending on Maui was up 2.3% to $199.60 in June, and up 6.4% in the first six months of the year to $205.90…

The data included visitor increases to Maui of 1.6% from the US West, 4.9% from the US East, and 15.4% from Canada, offsetting a 24%decrease from Japan. Factors affecting visitor arrivals include growing competition, the strengthening of the US dollar against international currencies and other economic conditions.

Visitor arrivals to Maui fell in March, but higher average daily spending contributed to a 5.7% increase in Maui visitor expenditures, according to updated data released by the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority.
