A blessing was held on Thursday morning for the new Kīhei Police Station, which houses a detective bureau, a criminal investigation division, a training division, uniform services and executive offices.
The event runs from 5:30 to 8 p.m. and includes: a traditional Hawaiian blessing by kumu hula Kaponoʻai Molitau; special performances by actor and jazz aficionado Jimmy Borges, Grammy award winner George Kahumoku, and more.
According to the Division of Aquatic Resources, this is the thirteenth reported shark incident statewide this year, and the eighth in Maui waters. The agency notes that over the last 20 years, Hawaiʻi has averaged about four unprovoked shark incidents per year, but numbers per individual year are “highly variable.”
The proposal includes an overview of the contamination discovered at the former military site, the potential risks, cleanup standards, remediation alternatives, and the selection of a preferred alternative.
