NTSB Report: “Loud Bang” Heard Prior to Kalaupapa Plane Crash

The pilot of a plane that crashed off of Kalaupapa, Molokaʻi in December heard, “a loud bang,” and said the plane experienced a “total loss of power” shortly after takeoff, according to a preliminary accident report published this week by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The application window for Kamehameha Schools’ summer programs opens today, Jan. 2, 2014. The Explorations programs are designed to introduce and expand upon Hawaiian cultural traditions and knowledge.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture today confirmed that an invasive stinging ant called the Little Fire Ant has spread from Hawaiʻi Island to Oʻahu and Maui.

KIRC Receives Grants to Support Cultural Programming in Kīhei

One project will prepare an 8-acre parcel of land in Kīhei for future use as a Kahoʻolawe Cultural Center. A separate grant will go towards the design of a “Kumeheu” walking trail with native plants and interpretive educational experience about Kahoʻolawe on the same Kīhei property.

The department urged the public to consider leaving fireworks to the professionals, which include two public fireworks displays at midnight: one in Kīhei at a barge offshore of the Grand Wailea Resort, and the other at the Mānele Bay Hotel on Lānaʻi.

Necropsy Reveals Dwarf Sperm Whale was Pregnant, Diseased

A dwarf sperm whale that beached itself along the Kīhei shoreline in South Maui on Christmas Day was a pregnant female that likely suffered from infectious disease, according to a necropsy conducted by the Hawaiʻi Pacific University.
