Maui County Council Committee Leadership Announced

Committee leadership roles for the Maui County Council were announced today as the body prepares for the upcoming 2015-2017 term, which begins on Jan. 2, 2015.

“The administration used non-compliance fines as the reason for cutting services and the need for additional resources, but they have not had any violations since 2011,” said White.

Mayor Arakawa said that the restoration of services would be implemented immediately, and that he would be submitting a new budget amendment early next year, after the election had passed, to avoid any further “political agendas” and “bickering.”

Special Council Meeting to Address Mayor’s Vetoes

The County Charter requires a two-thirds vote by the council to override the mayor’s line-item vetoes. The deadline to act is June 26 — that’s 10 days after the budget bill was returned, Baisa said.
