Sept. 16: Utility work to impact traffic on Haleakalā Highway near Dairy Road

To maintain safe and reliable service, Hawaiian Electric will be working to upgrade equipment on Haleakalā Highway, between Koloa Street and Dairy Road, on Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. For the safety of the public and crews, the work requires the partial closure of the makai (ocean-side) lane of Haleakalā Highway in this area.

Maui court confirms residents should have received hearing before sweep of homeless encampment

A group of unsheltered residents living on Amala Place in Kahului sued the county in 2021, saying they weren’t given enough notice and weren’t granted a hearing to make their case before the sweep.

Two nēnē killed by cars on Maui

Two nēnē born and raised on Maui were killed by cars in separate incidents on Sunday, according to the state Department of Land and Natural Resources. Endangered nēnē are the Hawai‘i’s State Bird. One of the birds was part of a pair that witnesses report were being fed by someone in a stopped car on Amala Place in Kahului. The other nēnē was hit near the air cargo bypass of the airport.

The new 14,785 foot predator-exclusion fence under construction at Maui’s Kanahā Pond Wildlife Sanctuary, will be the longest of its kind the nation when complete.

Predator-proof fence installation begins at Kanahā Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary

Work is currently underway to replace an old, rusty fence that surrounds the sprawling Kanahā Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary on Maui. The old fending is being replaced with predator-proof fencing to keep rats, cats, mongoose, and dogs from attacking ground-nesting birds.

The new fencing at Kanahā Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary will provide safe nesting habitats for native and endangered birds by excluding mammalian predators such as rats, mongoose and cats.

Live skunk found in mongoose trap at Kanahā Sanctuary on Maui, euthanized

A skunk was found in a trap by personnel from the Department of Land and Natural Resources in Maui’s Kanahā Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary on Monday morning. The traps were usually set to catch feral cats and mongoose in the wildlife sanctuary area.

58 Tons of Solid Waste, 54 Derelict Vehicles Removed in Amala Place Clean-up

Since the cleanup began on Monday, social workers were able to assist eight individuals to move into shelter with support services, and 11 have moved out of the area. As of Wednesday, county officials say five occupants remain temporarily camped on “privately owned land.” Two are planning to move into shelter on Thursday and the other three will relocate by Friday at the landowner’s request, according to a county press release.

Major Clean-Up Underway at Kanahā Wildlife Sanctuary and Amala Place

On Monday, Lt. John Yamamoto of the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement and his officers posted a half dozen camps in the bushes next to the beach, warning people they’d need to move today. State officials say the crews encountered at least two illegal campers who were told to leave before the contract crews and heavy equipment moved in.

Amala Place Gate to Kanahā Beach Park to be Locked, Sept. 19-24 for Area Clean-up

County officials say the temporary closure is needed to safeguard public safety during the area’s planned clean-up that will require heavy equipment to remove derelict vehicles and solid waste from the area.  

Amala Place Clean-Up to Begin This Month

Today the County of Maui and the Hawaiʻi State Department of Land and Natural Resources announced plans for a comprehensive clean-up of public lands surrounding the Kanahā Pond Wildlife Sanctuary and Wailuku-Kahului Wastewater Treatment Plant.

County Joins Police in Removing 41 Vehicles Abandoned Near Kanahā in Kahului, Maui

The Maui Police Department and Maui County’s Department of Environmental Management’s Environmental Protection & Sustainability Division have joined forces to remove 41 abandoned vehicles from Amala Place roadsides near Kanahā Pond State Wildlife Sanctuary and the County’s Wailuku-Kahului Wastewater Reclamation Facility in Kahului.
