As part of its commitment to the revitalization of Lahaina following the August 2023 wildfires, the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College will once again provide tuition support for eligible graduates entering college this coming Fall 2025 Semester.

One year after putting two teams in the Division I state championship game, the MIL has reached the midway point of the baseball season with three teams — Kamehameha Maui, Maui High and Baldwin — all separated by just one game.

The Maui Interscholastic League will field nine teams in the first season for girls flag football. The state is set to have 58 teams compete in the sport this spring.

The King Kekaulike boys and Maui Christian Academy girls claimed team titles at the season-opening Maui Interscholastic League surf competition Saturday at D.T. Fleming Beach Park.

The projects at Lahainaluna on-campus gym, and the county-owned Lahaina Civic Center and War Memorial Gymnasium, have made it difficult for sports teams to practice at the youth and adult levels.

A vision decades in the making is now becoming a reality with the announcement of a $15.43 million RAISE Grant to fund the West Maui Greenway.

With three matches to play in its MIL season, Kamehameha Maui can clinch the MIL championship in their next match, against Baldwin (3-2-0) next Saturday.

In midst of unknowns througout men’s professional golf, Maui’s event has grown stronger

The first two families to finish rebuilding in Lahaina are both on Komo Mai Street, one of the earliest neighborhoods to take shape after the wildfire. Residents say it was a close-knit neighborhood and that the reconstruction and slow return of the community is a hopeful sign.

The Bears’ win on Friday evens the season series 1-1. The two teams are tied atop the Maui Interscholastic League Division I standings and appear poised to make another run at the state tournament.

The 55th annual Garner Ivey Maui Invitational Wrestling Tournament brought the Forest Grove High School teams from Oregon, led by Baldwin High School alumnus Guy Takahashi. Also at the meet was Frank Johnson, the Linfield University head coach, who was recruiting the talent at the meet that also included high school teams from around the state.

The club has been through a lot since the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfires, which claimed the life of one member and the homes of 40 members. While the December gathering last year was subdued and a reunion of members scattered across the island, this year’s event was a more traditional, festive holiday gathering.

The tournament will be the largest event that the Maui Rugby Union has ever taken part in, and they will be among the youngest competitors.

The Lunas finished 6-5 and said goodbye to 22 seniors after the game. “We’re just proud of our seniors and what they were able to accomplish in the last four years, considering everything that’s been going on,” Rickard said. “It’s not an excuse. They played through it, they played to the end and we’re very proud. 

Bubba Ho’opi’i-Tuionetoa was a standout youth and high school baseball player growing up on Maui. Now, he is one step away from becoming the fifth player from Maui to make it to Major League Baseball.

The two championship games came down to key defensive stops.

After losing his home, running marathons to raise money for the Lahaina community has become Kahaiali’i’s mission. “Every step I take, they’re taking those same steps with me,” he said.

Baldwin plays Lahainaluna Friday, Kamehameha Maui takes on King Kekaulike Saturday with state berths to each winner

In football, King Kekaulike deals Kamehameha Maui its first MIL loss to force a Division II title game. And in volleyball, Maui Prep clinched its first MIL D-II title and will join three other MIL teams in the state tournaments this week.
