These deployable assets strengthen emergency communications in some of the nation’s most hazard-prone and geographically complex environments. The equipment ensures that critical connectivity for Hawaiʻi first responders can quickly be restored independent of commercial infrastructure or power.

The 2023 Maui wildfires “still weigh heavily on everybody in the department, and it was something that a lot of our firefighters faced that day that they hope to never have to see again,” Maui Fire Chief Brad Ventura said.

Kahikinui, along with Waiohuli and Launiupoko, were the first communities on Maui to earn Firewise USA recognition in 2016 — and now there are 34 with another 16 going through the process.

Commissioners credited Chief Ventura for successfully managing equipment upgrades, recruitment and retention of employees, oversight of capital improvement projects, spearheading the department’s wellness program, collaborating with nonprofits for enhanced emergency response, and effective problem solving.

Maui Fire Chief Jeffrey Murray received a positive review in the annual evaluation compiled by the Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety Commission.

The Maui Department of Fire and Public Safety welcomed New Deputy Fire Chief, Lionel Montalvo to the post during a swearing-in and badge pinning ceremony.

The annual performance evaluation of Maui Fire Chief Jeffrey Murray for the 2016 calendar year was “very favorable.”

Since the beginning of 2016, Maui County experienced brush fires almost every month, resulting in road closures, heavy traffic, and thousands of acres burned.

“We are so fortunate to have the best Fire Chief in the state, and his positive attitude drifts down to the whole department,” said William “Butch” Soares, outgoing Chair of the Fire & Public Safety Commission.

The Pacific Cancer Foundation presents a Guns vs Hoses softball game in partnership with the Maui Police and Fire Departments this weekend to benefit Maui County cancer patients and survivors.

“Chief Murray has performed exceptionally well in relation to the Commission’s expectations,” the announcement said of Chief Murray, who was named to the post six years ago.
