Hawaiʻi downgraded to Tsunami ADVISORY following 8.8 Russia quake; 15 foot drop in water levels reported at Kahului Harbor
A Tsunami Advisory remains in effect for Hawaiʻi. This comes following a large 8.8 earthquake off the east coast of Kamachatka Russia at 1:25 p.m. HST on Tuesday, July 29, 2025. The state was downgraded from a warning to an advisory late last night at around 10:30 p.m.
No tsunami threat to Hawaiʻi after 7.0 Loyalty Islands earthquake
There is no tsunami threat for Hawaiʻi following a 7.0 preliminary magnitude earthquake reported at 11:03 a.m. HST Southeast of the Loyalty Islands.

The magnitude has been downgraded from an 8.0 to a 7.8. Based on all available data from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center there is no tsunami threat to the State of Hawaiʻi. Therefore, the tsunami watch is cancelled.
Tsunami Advisory Cancelled: 2.2 Foot Wave Reported in Kahului
In Kahului on Maui a tsunami wave of 1.2 feet was reported at 3:53 a.m.; and a 2.2 foot wave was recorded at 4:35 a.m. according to preliminary data compiled by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center. Wave activity was occurring in 18 to 22 minute intervals.
State Closes Coastal Areas to Assess Impacts of Tsunami Advisory
State managed coastal and low-lying areas will remain closed on Thursday morning until staff from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources is able to assess ocean conditions following a large earthquake in Chile on Wednesday afternoon.

HOWEVER…SEA LEVEL CHANGES AND STRONG CURRENTS MAY OCCUR ALONG ALL COASTS THAT COULD BE A HAZARD TO SWIMMERS AND BOATERS AS WELL AS TO PERSONS NEAR THE SHORE AT BEACHES AND IN HARBORS AND MARINAS. THE THREAT MAY CONTINUE FOR SEVERAL HOURS AFTER THE INITIAL WAVE ARRIVAL.
