Maui Coronavirus Updates

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health reported 4,464 new COVID-19 cases for the week of July 7-13, 2022, which is 83 more cases than the previous week. There were 11 deaths. 

When school begins next month, the Hawaiʻi Department of Health will strongly encourage indoor mask use when COVID-19 levels are high or medium. The department will no longer recommend universal masking in most situations.

State health officials today say that while they are seeing a decline in COVID-19 cases, they are seeing notable deaths, which is a lagging indicator from the latest omicron surge. The department is also monitoring the BA.4 and BA.5 variants and reviewing recommendations for the upcoming school year.

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health reported 4,381 new COVID-19 cases for the week of June 30 to July 6, 2022, which is 981 fewer cases than the previous week. There were 20 deaths. 

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health reported 5,362 new COVID-19 cases for the week of June 23-29, 2022, which is 120 fewer cases than the previous week. There were 15 deaths.  It is the sixth week in a row that case numbers are down.

The Hawai‘i Department of Health has adopted the CDC recommendation that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine can be used as an option for children and adolescents ages 6 through 17.

COVID-19 vaccines now are available on all islands for children under 5 and at least six months old, according to the Hawaiʻi Department of Health.

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Health reported 5,482 new COVID-19 cases for the week of June 16-22, 2022, which is 1,717 fewer cases than the previous week. There were 15 deaths.

A new Public Health Report from the University of Hawaiʻi found almost 2 in 3 adults in the state reported negative effects on mental health, food security, job security, housing and poverty, with 12% saying a friend had died and 9% losing a family member.

The latest COVID-19 update from the State of Hawaiʻi shows the average number of new cases per day in Maui County is 86 over the week June 9-15, down 17 per day from the previous week.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has rescinded its order requiring travelers to show a negative COVID-19 pre-departure test or documentation of recovery from COVID-19 before boarding a flight to the United States.

A new UH report describes how the federal government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic created a perfect storm in which private laboratories could earn huge profits from PCR testing while insurance companies could pass those lab fees on to customers.

“Lifting the requirement will make travel easier, facilitating more international visitors and helping hotels continue on the road to recovery, especially as we approach peak travel season this summer,” said American Hotel & Lodging Association President & CEO Chip Rogers.

The latest data represents the second consecutive drop in the weekly count for new infections, following nine consecutive weeks of increases. 

Although there is a drop in the latest weekly count, the number of “active” cases statewide is 15,826, higher than last week’s total of 14,871 “active” cases statewide over two weeks. The number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 also increased from 162 on May 25 to 183 on June 1, 2022.

The state Department of Health is reporting a COVID-19 count of 8,924 new cases over the past week, between May 19-25, 2022. The latest data represents a ninth consecutive week of increases in new infections. 

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino is calling for the public to use “respectful masking” and practice “COVIDsense” amid a rise in hospitalizations on Maui.

In partnership with the County of Maui, Minit Medical Urgent Care continues to offer free testing for COVID-19 at locations in Kahului, Kīhei and Lahaina. The reminder was issued today by the County of Maui amid rising case counts.

Effective Sunday, May 22, 2022, the Maui hospital will allow one visitor per patient, per day for a maximum of two hours a day during the hours of 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Maui Health officials note that some units and/or patients may be closed to visitors at certain times.

The COVID-19 community transmission level in Maui County increased to “high” on mapping tools provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
