The arrest stems from a June 2, 2020 motor vehicle collision at 10:35 p.m., fronting 175 East Līpoa Street, involving a pedestrian and a truck that allegedly fled the area.  

Effective immediately, emergency restrictions imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic for commercial and recreational boating and ocean recreation are being relaxed statewide. Commercial and recreational boating can now include up to ten people on a vessel at one time, operating under new COVID-19 “Act With Care” guidelines.

Governor David Ige said troops would be able to return and the state would be able to extend National Guard presence at the traffic checkpoints until July. “I think we all can agree that we don’t want to return to what it was before COVID-19; and we would like to come up with a plan to figure out how to best manage the Hāna Highway–and then also the Piʻilani Highway on the back side,” said Sen. English.

The new case today is a non-resident who traveled to O‘ahu and became ill while in self-quarantine. A previous Maui case was removed after re-testing with negative results. To date, 612 people (96.2%) have recovered including 111 in Maui County. There are currently 24 active cases in the state.

Police say Maui County’s total index crime rate in 2019 was the lowest on record since the state began collecting data in 1975. The number of reported crimes increased for five Index Crime categories: robbery (67 cases), +26.4%; aggravated assault (271 cases), +3%; theft (3,746 incidents), +2.9%; and arson (128 cases), +4.9%.

Maui police have closed a portion of East Līpoa Road in Kīhei between Liloa Road and Kupalaiki Loop (makai) due to an ongoing police investigation. Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible.

A $200 fine, plus court fees, was the sole penalty issued yesterday by the South Kohala Court against 1 of 2 defendants charged with poaching 550 reef fish for the aquarium pet trade.

This week two families received keys to their new home as part of Habitat for Humanity Maui’s affordable housing project in Lahaina. Both homes were completed in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic resulting in a decrease of volunteers for the project.

There was one new COVID-19 case reported today on the island of Oʻahu, bringing Hawaiʻi’s COVID-19 case total to 653. To date, 609 people (95.7%) have recovered including 111 in Maui County. There are currently 27 active cases in the state.

On Monday, June 1, 1,538 people arrived in Hawaiʻi, according to new data released by the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority and compiled by data collected by the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation’s new Mandatory Travel Declaration Form.  

Hawaiʻi’s population is expected to drop by about 30,000 people by 2022, according to projections by Carl Bonham, Executive Director of University of Hawaiʻi Economic Research Organization.

Blow dryers are allowed for use as needed at barbershops and hair salons in Maui County.  It was among the new rules that took effect on Monday as more businesses and services reopen across the county.

A student attending college in Hawai‘i was arrested this morning by Special Agents from the Investigation Division of the Dept. of the Attorney General. 21-year-old Venasio Vaipulu was reported by a witness.

A ball python snake was turned in to authorities on Tuesday, May 26th by a resident who said he found the snake while hunting in a forested area in Kahaluu, O`ahu.

Governor David Ige today announced he will lift the interisland quarantine on travel between the Hawaiian Islands, effective on June 16, 2020.

There were no new COVID-19 case reported today, with Hawaiʻi’s COVID-19 case total remaining at 652. To date, 608 people (95.7%) have recovered including 110 in Maui County. There are currently 27 active cases in the state.

The number of out-of-state travelers to Hawaiʻi continues to climb with more than 1,200 people arriving in Hawaiʻi on Saturday. That included 369 visitors and 373 returning residents.  There were no trans-Pacific flights to Maui on Saturday.  

A fire at the Texaco service station on Papalaua Street in West Maui early Sunday morning caused an estimated $250,000 in damage. 

Over the weekend, volunteers with the Hawaiʻi Wing Civil Air Patrol delivered more than 800 pounds of medical supplies and Personal Protective Equipment to the Maui Emergency Management Agency to support first responders.  The delivery was made with the help of Maui’s 057 squadron. 

A peaceful Paddle Out for George Floyd was held just before sunset on the West shores of Maui on Sunday in a show of unity amid tensions nationally over the man’s death at the hands of a police officer.
