Firefighters have gained 90% containment on the 4,100-acre Māʻalaea Mauka wildfire as of 10:30 this morning.

Homeless Man Arrested for Wailuku Arson Fire

A homeless man was arrested and charged with second degree arson in connection with a three to four acre brush fire reported on Wednesday, Oct. 2, near the entrance of Sandhills Estates in Wailuku.

Kingsnake Turned In Under Amnesty

A live California kingsnake was turned in to the Honolulu Zoo under the state’s Amnesty Program at about noon on Tuesday, Oct. 1st.

Bernard Brown Pleads Not Guilty to Second Degree Murder of “Mo” Monsalve

Mā‘alaea Mauka Wildfire on Maui 70% Contained

The Māʻalaea Mauka brush fire has consumed 4,100 acres and has been contained 70 percent as of noon today, the Maui Fire Department reports.  The Honoapiʻilani Highway was also reopened to traffic after a temporary closure that started at around 10:45 a.m. while crews built up a berm to prevent the fire from encroaching onto the highway.

A 37-year-old man was arrested for terroristic threatening following an altercation involving a machete on the Kahekili Highway in Waiheʻe on Wednesday night.

Parade to Kick Off 97th Maui Fair

The 97th Maui Fair will open with a traditional parade today. The parade takes place at 4:30 p.m. starting at the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College along Kaʻahumanu Avenue and ending at the entrance to Maehara Baseball Stadium on Kanaloa Avenue. The Fairground will open 5 p.m.

Maui Flood Advisory Until 8 a.m.

At 6:35 a.m., radar showed fast-moving moderate to heavy showers periodically soaking portions of windward Maui. Rainfall rates in the heaviest showers are between 1 and 2 inches per hour, with these showers affecting both windward west Maui, and windward Haleakalā.

The Honoapiʻilani Highway remains open in both directions following an extended road closure yesterday due to firefighting operations and reduced visibility.
