Firefighters battle blaze at Hammerhead Metals in Central Maui

Update: 6:57 a.m., April 21, 2024: The cause of a rubbish fire at the Central Maui Baseyard on Saturday is under investigation. The fire burned a pile of recyclable material starting at 10:36 a.m. on April 20, 2024. Maui fire crews accessed the area off of the Maui Veterans Highway and were able to extinguish the blaze by 11:50 p.m.

New county program helps Maui residents tow, scrap vehicles at no cost

The Maui County Tow and Scrap Pilot Program launched in July to cover the cost of towing and scraping personal junk and unwanted vehicles. A similar program is available on Lānaʻi, and options for Molokaʻi residents are coming in the near future.

Maui fire crews responded to a scrap metal fire today at the Central Maui Baseyard industrial complex, fire officials confirmed. Upon arrival, crews found multiple car fires and at a scrap metal facility.

Road work begins today along the Mokulele Highway in Puʻunēnē on Maui. Work is ongoing and is scheduled to take place Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily.

Mokulele Accident Near Central Maui Baseyard

UPDATE: 7:45 a.m. 7/31/12: The Mokulele Highway is now completely OPEN in both directions. The road was closed in the Kahului-bound direction earlier today because of a traffic accident reported at around 5:30 a.m. fronting the Central Maui Baseyard.
