#East Maui Taro Festival

Organizers of the 16th annual Queen’s Challenge awarded top honors to Jake Sipes of Haʻikū and Kuloa Lind of Kīpahulu for their traditional Hawaiian kalo varieties during the East Maui Taro Festival on Saturday.

The Queen’s Challenge competition, which honors Queen Emma and highlights the skills and pride of kalo (taro) farmers across Maui, will take place once again at the 2026 East Maui Taro Festival on April 18 at the Hāna Ballpark.

Maui Economic Opportunity Hāna drivers will be picking up attendees of the East Maui Taro Festival on Saturday, April 26 from the three parking lots and taking them to the event at the Hāna Ball Park from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge for the roundtrip ride.

After a five-year hiatus, the Queen’s Challenge competition—honoring Queen Emma and celebrating the skills and pride of Maui’s kalo (taro) farmers—will return at the 2025 East Maui Taro Festival on April 26 at Hāna Ballpark.

The Hawai‘i Tourism Authority has announced its upcoming community partnerships focused on natural resources, cultural initiatives, festivals and signature events. HTA is reinvesting nearly $3 million in partnerships with 105 community-based organizations, projects, programs and events taking place across Hawai‘i from January 1 to June 30, 2025.

After a hiatus due to COVID-19 closures, the East Maui Taro Festival is back to showcase the best of Hawaiian culture, cuisine, and the community of Hāna, Maui. The 28th event returns on Saturday, April 20, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hāna Ballpark.

The East Maui Taro Festival has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs for the 28th Annual East Maui Taro Festival, which will be held on April 25, 2020.

Experience the food, arts and history of the multitude of cultures that call Maui home. Participate in outdoor or indoor activities unique to Maui.

The East Maui Taro Festival has been awarded a $7,000 grant from the Office of Hawaiian Affairs to hold the 27th Annual East Maui Taro Festival on April 13.

The 25th annual East Maui Taro Festival will take place this weekend in Hāna.

“All these areas were populated in taro from Hāna to Keʻanae and Wailuanui. Today we see less,” said Hoshino. “Everything precious to us from wai (water) to ʻāina (land) to ocean because that’s our connection.”

The Office of Hawaiian Affairs has awarded a $ 7,000 grant to the East Maui Taro Festival to support its annual event held in Hāna, Maui.

Celebrate all things root veggie staple beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 3. The all-day East Maui Taro Festival is held at the Hana Ballpark and lasts until 5 p.m.

The event is free and features a farmers market, poi pounding, arts and crafts, music and hula.

Many of the performances at this weekend’s Maui Taro Festival were dedicated to beloved Hāna entertainer, Pekelo Cosma, who passed away in August at the age of 51.

Traditional Hawaiian cultural practices are paired with a Farmers’ Market, poi pounding, food booths, arts and crafts, music and hula. The 20th Anniversary edition of the East Maui Taro Festival on Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Hana Ball Park.

The 19th annual East Maui Taro Festival will take place at the Hana Ballpark April 29 to May 1, bringing with it poi pounding demonstrations, taro pancakes, loco moco bowls and a variety of traditional foods.
