AARP Hawaiʻi welcomes Maui resident Grant Chun, a retired attorney and housing executive, as its new state president. The state president, a volunteer position, works closely with the state director, staff and volunteers to lead AARP’s work in Hawaiʻi. 

The inter island freight company, Young Brothers, LLC, has announced a leadership transition. Jeremiah “Jay” Ana is stepping down as President after leading the company since 2020 and will assume an advisory role through the end of the year to support a seamless transition. Frank Almaraz has been appointed Interim President.

Maui Economic Opportunity’s 6th Gala, the agency’s largest annual fundraiser set for March 22, is sold out. The event honors Grant Chun, recently retired Hale Mahaolu Executive Director, former MEO Board President and community leader, and MEO’s 60th anniversary.

A groundbreaking ceremony with a Hawaiian blessing marked the beginning of construction of 117 units of senior housing at Līloa Hale, a project in Kīhei by Hale Mahaolu and Highridge Costa Development Co.

Hale Mahaolu, a nonprofit affordable housing provider, today announced that Anders Lyons has been appointed executive director of the organization. Lyons previously served as the nonprofit’s board president. Hale Mahaolu, which has a portfolio of 13 properties with more than 1,000 units of affordable housing, also announced that its executive director, Grant Chun, will retire and that Trevor Tokishi has been named board president.

An official statement was released this morning from Hale Mahaolu Eono regarding last Tuesdayʻs wildfire, a timeline of events, and actions taken during the incident.

Hale Mahaolu recently welcomed Joyce Tamori to its Board of Directors. Tamori is currently the Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Hawaiʻi Health Systems Corporation, which oversees the State Hospital system. She joins Hale Mahaolu’s 15-member Board that provides fiscal and program guidance to Hale Mahaolu.

AARP Hawaiʻi has added Grant Chun, former Maui County managing director and executive director of Hale Mahaolu, to its Executive Council.

An annual Charity Golf Tournament, hosted by the Credit Unions of Maui raised $45,000 to benefit local nonprofit Hale Mahaolu.

The Maui County Charter Commission concluded its hearings Thursday, on more than 130 proposed charter amendments. Additionally, in a surprising announcement, Commission Chair Lance Collins announced his resignation effective at the end of Thursday’s meeting.

It is almost universally accepted that Maui is in dire need of more affordable housing. The Waiehu-based Hale Mahalou Ke Kahua initiative promises an ambitious solution to a pressing need.

An 11-person citizens commissions is seeking public input for its year-long review of Maui County’s governing document, the Maui County Charter. The review is conducted once a decade.

Mayor Michael Victorino congratulated nominees to the Maui County Charter Commission after they were recommended for approval Tuesday by the County Council’s Government Relations, Ethics and Transparency Committee.

A&B Properties Vice President, Grant Chun, was appointed to a seat on the state Board of Education; and Kula resident, Doreen Nāpua Gomes assumes the Maui seat on the Hawaiian Homes Commission.

“The thought of a sidewalk and a paved walkway, so that people can view and visit the site makes my na’au turn,” said Makua of the cultural preserve plan for burials and iwi kūpuna.

The funding is intended to help in reducing the cost of classes for students, and stimulate enrollment for the program.

The four-story, 138-room hotel has been casually referred to as the Maui Airport Hotel because of its close proximity to the Kahului Airport.
