As Maui rings in the new year, we take a moment to reflect on 2022–a year that brought highs and lows, challenges and triumphs, and shed light on erosion and the economy. Here are Maui Now’s top 22 stories of 2022…

The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park reopened at 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022. The Headquarters Visitor Center at 7,000 feet remained open until 4 p.m. The Haleakalā Visitor Center at 9,740 feet remains closed however the parking lot and restrooms are open.  

An accumulation of snow was observed along the roadsides near the summit of Haleakalā Tuesday. The observation was made after the most severe impacts from a kona low storm system passed over the state, bringing with it hazardous conditions to the mountaintop in recent days. Tonight’s forecast (Dec. 20, 2022) calls for lows near 35 °F with isolated showers and damaging winds.

A winter weather advisory was in effect yesterday through midnight as a passing disturbance brought fleeting snow to the upper elevations of Haleakala and more frigid conditions to the Big Island Summits.

The winter weather advisory has been canceled for the summit of Haleakalā on Maui (as of 9:52 a.m.), but remains in effect for the summits of Hawaiʻi Island through 6 p.m. The National Weather Service says the threat for winter weather on Maui has ended.

A winter weather advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. today (Thursday, Feb. 4, 2021) for Haleakalā Summit above the 9,000 foot elevation.

A Winter Storm Watch was issued for the summits on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi and Haleakalā on Maui for elevations above 9,000 feet from Saturday night to Sunday afternoon.

The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park reopened to the public at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12, after two days of closure due to unsafe road conditions and power outages.

A weakening cold core low will pass over the islands overnight, resulting in continued frigid temperatures at the summit of Haleakalā on Maui above 9,000 feet.

Additional snow accumulations of 1-3 inches and ice accumulations of around one-tenth of an inch is in the forecast, with winds gusting as high as 120 mph.

Winter weather advisory to begin at midnight Sunday and continue through 6 p.m. on Monday, wind warning set for 6 p.m. Sunday until 6 a.m. on Monday. 

Additional snow accumulations of up to one inch is forecast over Haleakalā today.  

The Summit District of Haleakalā National Park will remain closed – sunrise included- through Friday, Feb. 15, 2019.

Haleakalā National Park remains closed due to snow and ice and will remain closed until conditions are safe for members the public.

The NWS says there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact the summits of the Big Island and Haleakalā on Maui.

Up to three inches of snow is forecast at the summit of Haleakalā on Maui as a powerful winter storm tracks southward toward the island chain today.

Haleakalā, Maui has reports of extremely light, intermittent snow this morning, but not enough to stick around for long.

The Summit District at Haleakalā re-opened at 4:30 this morning after an overnight closure that went into effect on Friday due to heavy rain and icy conditions.

Due to current temperatures and wind chill, motorists are advised that there is black ice on the park road at the upper elevations at Haleakalā.
