A 25-year-old Arizona man suffered injuries to his hip, lower back and arm after slipping and falling during a hike in the mountains of East Maui, Monday afternoon.

Despite the recent dry conditions, rainfall totals for 2024 through the end of November were still near to above average at most of the gages across Maui County. The rain gage at West Wailuaiki Stream had the highest year-to-date total of 198.49 inches (95% of average).

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation Airports Division has received authorization for $11,098,912 in Coronavirus Relief and Response Supplemental Appropriations for five airports in Maui County. It’s part of a larger $46.3 million appropriation for a dozen airports across the state.

Ampaire, a global leader in electric aviation, is the first to complete a demonstration flight of a hybrid-electric aircraft along an actual airline route. The company flew its Electric EEL aircraft on Nov. 22 on a 20-minute flight from Maui’s Kahului Airport across the island to Hāna and back on a single charge.

Despite a reduction in the number of flights, Mokulele will not eliminate service to any of its airports.

The four-year $650,000 federal subsidy to Mokulele Airlines will help the carrier maintain regular air service to and from the Hāna community. Mokulele will provide Hāna with 14 nonstop round trips a week to Kahului.

Power is temporarily out at the Hāna Airport in East Maui, with an estimated restoration this afternoon.  The state Department of Transportation, Airports Division says operations are still ongoing, and daytime operations are not impacted by the outage.

Mokulele Airlines will launch twice daily service between Kahului and Lāna‘i City on June 17, 2019.

Startup Ampaire, is partnering with Mokulele Airlines to retrofit of a Cessna aircraft with hybrid electric power. Test flights are planned in September.

East Maui Councilmember Robert Carroll today sent a letter to the Federal Aviation Administration requesting further review of a proposed skydiving operation at Hāna Airport. Carroll contends that there have been many changes in and around the Hāna Airport that warrant an updated assessment for the skydiving operation.

The flight brings to three the total number of daily trips from Kahului to Hāna offered by the carrier since it reestablished regular flight service to the rural location in October of 2012.

For the next four months, Hana Airport will be closed at night between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Sunday nights through Friday mornings, state officials announced.

“This measure encourages commercial air carriers to continue service to the remote parts of our State,” said Sen. J. Kalani English. “In effect, I hope it increase reliability and stabilize air fares.”

Hana Airport on Maui and Kalaupapa Airport on Moloka’i will receive $150,000 each in federal funds for terminal building improvements.
