Flash Flood threat continues for parts of Big Island as Tropical Depression Moke makes its way south of the state. The system is forecast to degenerate to a remnant low late today and dissipate on Tuesday.

On the forecast track, the center of Moke will pass southwest of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi overnight and well south of the smaller main Hawaiian Islands on Monday. Rainfall totals of 3 to 6 inches of rain are expected over eastern Maui.

Moke has weakened into a tropical depression with the latest forecast. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center reports that heavy rain and gusty winds are likely over the Big Island of Hawaiʻi today and tomorrow.

Moke is still expected to pass close enough to the Hawaiian Islands to produce a period of gusty winds and heavy rainfall across portions of the islands during the next day or two.

On the forecast track, the center of the storm is expected to pass a couple hundred miles south of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi today, then well south of the smaller main Hawaiian Islands early next week. Despite the center of Moke remaining south of the Hawaiian Islands, the cyclone is expected to pass close enough to produce a period of gusty winds and heavy rainfall across portions of the islands during the next couple of days.

Trade winds will continue to strengthen today as Tropical Storm Moke moves generally from east to west, south of the islands. This system will deliver periods of rainfall to all islands from late tonight through Monday, with the heaviest rainfall forecast along windward and southeast slopes of the Big Island. A Flood Watch goes into effect for the Big Island at midnight Saturday night. A Wind Advisory is in effect for parts of the Big Island and Maui County through 6 p.m. Sunday. Drier trade wind weather will return Tuesday.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center says heavy rain is forecast to impact the Big Island of Hawaiʻi late tonight, spreading westward across the remainder of the Hawaiian Islands Sunday into Monday. Although the strongest winds associated with Moke are expected to pass south of the Hawaiian Islands, strong gusty winds are likely, particularly in areas within and downslope of higher terrain.

Heavy rainfall associated with Moke will begin to impact the Big Island of Hawaiʻi late Saturday, with rain spreading westward across the remainder of the Hawaiian Islands Sunday into Monday. Forecasters with the National Weather Service say that although the strongest winds associated with Moke are expected to pass south of the Hawaiian Islands, strong gusty winds are likely, particularly in areas within and downslope of higher terrain.

Tropical Depression Two-C is forecast to become a tropical storm later today. The system is still expected to track south of Hawaiʻi late Saturday into Monday. Even with the southward track increased winds and rain are expected, with the highest rainfall totals expected across windward and southeast Big Island. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches with maximum amounts of 4 inches are expected on eastern Maui.

As Hawaiʻi continues to recover from the impacts of Lala, a new tropical system is forming southeast of the state. Maximum sustained winds are near 35 mph with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening is forecast, and the depression could become a tropical storm later today.

The County of Maui continues to prepare for possible impacts from Tropical Storm Lala, as emergency management officials echo that community members should be ready for potentially hazardous conditions across Maui County this weekend.

The University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa has identified a large-scale tropical disturbance called the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) as a significant driver of the islands’ climate, including extreme events, such as the extraordinary rainfall Hawaiʻi experienced in March and April.

A low-pressure system is drawing moisture northward across the state, causing the potential for heavy rain, thunderstorms and flash flooding.

Maui Emergency Management Agency, other County of Maui departments / agencies and the American Red Cross will proactively open shelters across Maui at 5 p.m. today, April 8, 2026, ahead of severe weather impacts. 

County crews are gearing up for storm response as impacts from a low pressure system begin impacting the state. Two shelters on Maui will proactively open at 5 p.m., including locations in Kīhei, and Wailuku. Residents and visitors on Maui and Molokaʻi are urged to conserve water as a precaution during this severe weather event.

A winter and spring of record-setting rainfall in Hawaiʻi likely is linked to record-breaking heat on the U.S. West Coast, the National Weather Service said.

Increased moisture will bring periods of heavy rain and a risk of flash flooding to the entire state by the end of this week and possibly into the weekend, with the most likely period of significant impacts during a period from Wednesday night, April 8, through early Friday, April 10.
