As Hawaiʻi enters the peak months of hurricane season, the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation is ramping up support for its Stronger Hawaiʻi Fund to help communities prepare for and respond to disasters.

The County of Maui continues to prepare for possible impacts from Tropical Storm Lala, as emergency management officials echo that community members should be ready for potentially hazardous conditions across Maui County this weekend.

Gov. Josh Green today signed an emergency proclamation declaring a state of emergency for Hawai‘i ahead of Tropical Storm Lala, which is currently forecast to approach the islands at near-hurricane strength this weekend.

Tropical Storm Fausto, located several hundred miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California in the Eastern North Pacific, is forecast to become a Hurricane by Tuesday as it continues a path northwest near 10 mph.

Over the past year, DLNR’s preparedness and response capabilities have been enhanced with new equipment, expanded aerial firefighting support, ongoing vegetation management and increased coordination with partner agencies.

The Hawai‘i Red Cross is bracing for a busier than normal hurricane season this summer and fall. The typical hurricane season begins on June 1 and runs through Nov. 30. This year, Red Cross chapters across the region are looking to train community members in shelter operations before disaster strikes. 

At 8 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, the center of Tropical Storm Amanda was located about 1,475 miles WSW of the southern tip of Baja California. Amanda is moving toward the NW near 8 mph and this motion is expected to continue through Friday, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Hurricane season in Hawaiʻi runs from June 1, through Nov. 30, 2026, and with an above-normal season forecast — including five to 13 tropical cyclones in the Central Pacific — County of Maui and Maui Emergency Management Agency officials are urging residents and visitors to prepare well before a storm is on the horizon. 

Throughout the entirety of the response, HING personnel assisted a total of 138 individuals and three dogs. Air crews conducted search and rescue operations that aided 47 people and two dogs, while ground crews assisted 91 people and one dog. To mitigate flood impacts and assist residents in recovery, service members filled 4,420 sandbags and provided crucial debris removal assistance to 164 homes across the impacted areas.

With forecasters projecting a busier-than-normal Central Pacific hurricane season, Hawaiian Electric is calling on customers across the islands to build emergency plans before the first storm threatens.

The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Insurance Division reminds consumers to evaluate their insurance policies before hurricane season, which begins June 1. Forecasters are indicating that El Niño conditions may develop heading into summer, which can increase hurricane activity in the Central Pacific Basin and heighten the potential for impacts to Hawaiʻi. 

The Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) is urging all residents and visitors to take steps now to ensure safety and resiliency as the hurricane season in Hawaiʻi gets underway. The Central Pacific hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through Nov. 30.

With hurricane and wildfire season coming up, Hawaiian Electric hosts a West Maui Emergency Preparedness Open House event to help prepare residents and their communities on Saturday, May 3, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., at the Lahaina Intermediate School cafeteria. 

The Hawaiʻi Department of Health Office of Public Health Preparedness reminds residents statewide to “Prepare N.O.W.” while still in hurricane season.

The 2024 central Pacific hurricane season outlook from forecasters at NOAA’s Central Pacific Hurricane Center and NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, calls for 1–4 tropical cyclones across the central Pacific Hurricane region. A near-normal season has 4 or 5 tropical cyclones, which include tropical depressions, tropical storms and hurricanes.

Research from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa revealed that intense tropical cyclones, equivalent to category 4 and 5 hurricanes, are arriving three to four days earlier with each decade of climate change.

Governor Josh Green, M.D., praised Hawai‘i’s handling of former Tropical Storm Calvin and cautioned that the storm was just the first challenge in a hurricane season that lasts through November.

Windy conditions and some wet weather could potentially develop around the middle of next week as Tropical Storm Calvin nears the islands from the east, according to the National Weather Service.
