2026 Maui Bon Dance Schedule: annual Buddhist observance honors loved ones, embraces gratitude
The Puʻunēnē Nichiren Mission will host the first Obon of the 2026 season on Saturday, June 6, with the dance beginning at 7 p.m. The season will conclude on Sept. 12 at Hāna Buddhist Temple.
2025 Maui Bon Dance Schedule: honoring ancestors, celebrating community
The spirit of summer returns to Maui with the 2025 Bon Dance season, a cherished cultural tradition that blends Buddhist reflection with joyful community celebration. Beginning in early June and running through mid-August, temples across the island will once again open their grounds to the public for evenings of dancing, music, food and remembrance.

Japanese calligraphy workshop set for Dec. 1 at Kahului Jodo Mission
Monk Sen of Rinzai Zen Mission in Paia will lead Japanese calligraphy workshops in two sessions Dec. 1 at the Kahului Jodo Mission. The first will be from 10 a.m. to noon; the second from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Bon dance season is set to make its return to Maui this summer. The Japanese Buddhist tradition of Obon, which is held at various temples throughout Maui County, is a community celebration to honor and offer prayers to the spirits of ancestors through music and dance.
