The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation notifies the public of full closures on Hāna Highway (Route 360) in both directions at the Nāʻiliʻilihāʻele Bridge (Mile Post 6.2) and Kaʻaiea Bridge (Mile Post 8.6) on Sunday night, Dec. 19, through Thursday morning, Dec. 23, from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., nightly, for bridge work.

A 41-year-old California man suffered multiple injuries to his body after falling approximately 20 feet from a waterfall onto rocks below in the area known as “Bamboo Forest” in the East Maui town of Kailua.

Fire officials say a 27-year-old woman from San Francisco, California was injured in a 25-foot fall. The woman landed on rocks adjacent to a pond and was unable to walk out on her own. Two members of her family, who reside in Kīhei, Maui, (a 47-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman) were also stranded due to a swollen stream following heavy rains in the area.

The male victim is a 38-year-old resident of Lahaina, Maui. Crews had responded to a report of an ocean drowning in the spot some refer to as “Puka Maui.”

The 3 siblings reported hearing a rumbling sound, and then the stream flow rose rapidly. They were unable make it across the last stream on the Bamboo Forest..
