The state of Hawaiʻi Department of Education is set to receive $9.3 million in post-disaster funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency for permanent repairs to King Kamehameha III Elementary School on Maui.

The Lahaina Restoration Foundation announced that a limited number of tickets are still available for the upcoming screening of E Hoʻi Ka Nani I Mokuʻula (Let the Glory Return to Mokuʻula).

On Thursday, Aug. 21, the 3D printer was officially delivered to the school. To mark the occasion, Hanvit visited Rivas’ 3rd and 5th grade technology classes, sharing her personal journey into coding and technology with the young students.

Courtney Sakalosky and Darice Garcia will present photos and stories from the annual cultural celebration, which continued this year despite the devastating loss of the school campus in the Lahaina fires.

The talented artists behind King Kamehameha III Elementary School’s temporary campus mural project are set to hold a community meeting at the temporary King Kamehameha III cafeteria on Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.

The community meeting to gather feedback on a new proposed site to rebuild King Kamehameha III Elementary School has been rescheduled to Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 5 p.m.

Maui Public Art Corps will begin a six-week process on Nov. 5 to install a large-scale mural across the temporary campus of King Kamehameha III Elementary School, located at 100 Akahele St. in Lahaina. 

Since hosting community feedback sessions over the summer, the Hawai‘i State Department of Education continues to explore options for a permanent location to rebuild the fire-damaged King Kamehameha III Elementary School. A decision to move forward has not been made at this time. The original three sites being considered each presented challenges, and community feedback on the site that appeared most promising showed it was least preferred by stakeholders.

The US Army Corps of Engineers, in partnership with federal, state, and local agencies, has completed debris removal from all residential properties devastated by the August 2023 wildfires in Lahaina. The milestone marks the return of 1,390 completed residential properties to the County of Maui. Property owners are now able to apply for building permits as part of the next phase in the rebuilding process.

The Hawaiʻi State Department of Education today released a report summarizing input and opinions from a series of community feedback opportunities on the rebuild plan for King Kamehameha III Elementary School. A total of 291 community members including faculty/staff, current school family members, alumni, and interested community members completed feedback surveys, delivered via three formats – at a staff/faculty meeting, at an open community meeting, or online. 

Lahaina’s two elementary schools reopened to hundreds of students today on a shared campus that faculty and staff from both schools have worked hard to make as inviting and familiar as possible for their communities impacted by the August wildfires.

Lahaina Intermediate School faculty and staff cheered and waved signs as they welcomed approximately 400 students back to their West Maui campus for the first time this academic year.

Lahainaluna High School faculty and staff welcomed approximately 700 students back to their home campus on Monday for the first time in more than two months since the Maui wildfires.

The state Department of Education has set a tentative goal of welcoming students back to the three West Maui campuses after fall break in mid-October.

Staff at all four public schools in Lahaina will remain on paid administrative leave through Friday, Aug. 25 as clean up and safety assessments continue at Princess Nāhi‘ena‘ena Elementary, Lahaina Intermediate and Lahainaluna High.

Upcountry, South and Central Maui public school campuses to begin phased reopenings next week; West Maui schools to remain closed; School enrollment announced for displaced families

A devastating wildfire sparked by gusty winds from a passing hurricane, left Maui’s Lahaina Town in an unrecognizable state. The popular tourist destination in the historic district of West Maui was described in media reports as being “flattened by fire” with businesses gutted and cars abandoned, leaving charred trees along a now shadeless and shambled path. Remaining is an ashy imprint of a moment in time, captured in these photos of what is now a present day reality.

Prince Albert was an honorary firefighter with Engine Co. Four. Kalākaua was also a member of Engine Co. Four and Kauikeaouli founded the department.

A main water line break on Front Street has resulted in a road closure and a water outage for 20 businesses and an elementary school in Lahaina. The outage began at approximately 12:30 p.m. and will continue until about 5:30 this evening, according to the county Department of Water Supply.

Kaniakapūpū, the summer palace of King Kamehameha III, lies within a restricted watershed in a densely forested part of Nuʻuanu on the island of Oʻahu. The site is closed to people, with the exception of Native Hawaiian cultural practitioners or permitted caretakers.
