Following recent rainfall and ongoing community water conservation, the County of Maui Department of Water Supply is suspending the Stage 1 Central and South Maui water shortage, effective immediately and until further notice.

Sirens used in last week’s fire and the tsunami warning earlier this summer show how the approach to sounding the sirens has changed since the deadly 2023 Lahaina blaze.

Maui County is moving closer to installing gates on the road, but residents and emergency officials aren’t sure it will deter people from starting fires.

Gates to restrict access to the road could be installed anywhere from six months to a year or more. As they sit in limbo, houseless community members living there worry where they’ll go next.

The County of Maui Department of Water Supply is reminding Central and South Maui visitors and residents to continue to conserve water under the Stage 1 Water Shortage.

Jerry Morgan, 63, of Kula was reported missing on Wednesday night Oct. 4, 2023 by his family, after failing to return home from kayaking earlier in the day.

Finalizing the acquisition was the last step before establishing a North Shore Preservation Zone to include Baldwin Beach Park, Baby Beach (Wawaʻu Point), plus 4 acres of shoreline between Mama’s Fish House in Kuʻau and Hoʻokipa. 

The state Department of Transportation will be conducting road work this week that will result in lane closures at various locations. Lane closure schedules may change at any time without further notice.  All projects are weather permitting.

Maui Electric Company is asking about 500 customers in parts of Waikapū and Wailuku to prepare for a scheduled outage on Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 10 p.m. to midnight.

Maui Electric reports power outages in Wailuku, Spreckelsville, Kū‘au and Waikapū.

The affected areas include all of Spreckelsville, Skill Village and Kūʻau Bay View. Affected streets include Haʻikū, Kokomo and Līlīkoʻi roads and Kupono St.

The Dept. of Water Supply’s back-up booster pump has been repaired, and the water conservation measure for Pā‘ia, Kū‘au, and Skill Village has been lifted.

The Department of Water Supply is requesting that residents and businesses in Paia, Kuau, and Skill Village to immediately conserve water until further notice.

UPDATE: Maui Electric has since restored power to all customers affected by the early morning outage in Sprecklesville, Pāʻia and Kūʻau as of 6:16 a.m.

Motorists are advised of a motor vehicle collision reported at around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2017 on the Hāna Highway in the Kūʻau/Hoʻokipa area.

The study is the first to show the extent of the impact of wastewater injection wells at Kahului Wastewater Reclamation Facility on Maui.
