Maui year in review: Top stories of 2024

Wildfire recovery, the cancellation of the Maui Fair, housing solutions, and election highlights are among the stories that made our list of top features this year. Here’s a recap of some of Maui’s biggest stories in 2024.

Lahaina Banyan Tree continues to show signs of recovery eight months after the Maui fires

The 150-year-old Lahaina banyan tree continues to show signs of recovery, eight months after the Maui fires. In video provided by the Hawai’i Department of Land and Natural Resources, Duane Sparkman of the Lahaina Treecovery project provides an update, describes some of the challenges the iconic tree still faces, and talks about what lies ahead.  

Lahaina Treescape Restoration Project update: New sprouts atop banyan tree

Volunteer arborists and landscapers have banded together as the Lahaina Treescape Restoration Project. The title was coined by arborist Steve Nimz who initiated care and watering for the historic Banyan tree, which is showing signs of recovery with new sprouts high in the canopy.

The popular tourist destination in the historic district of West Maui was described in media reports as being “flattened by fire” with businesses gutted and cars abandoned, leaving charred trees along a now shadeless and shambled path. Remaining is an ashy imprint of a moment in time, captured in these photos of what is now a present day reality.

147 Year Old Banyan Tree in Lahaina is Lit for the Holidays

The Lahaina Restoration Foundation invites the public to spend the evening in Lahaina and enjoy the colorful lights which will be illuminated nightly from 6 p.m. to midnight for the entire month of December.

20th Annual Lighting of Lahaina Banyan Tree

The ceremonial “Light The Banyan Tree” event features multi-colored holiday lights and takes place on Saturday, Dec. 2nd at 6:30 p.m.

Investigation Into Sale of Marijuana to Maui Students Nets Arrest

Maui police arrested a man in Lahaina on Tuesday following an investigation into the sale of marijuana to high school students at the Banyan Tree Park.

Lāhainā Banyan Tree Celebrates 140th Birthday

The celebration will take place over two days and will include a birthday cake, live music, silent auction, 25 Maui artists, a magician, clowns and a keiki birthday card contest. Admission is free.
