Approximately 200,000 gallons of partially treated wastewater (backwash) overflowed at the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility, 3300 Honoapiʻilani Highway, Lahaina, during kona storm 2 on March 21, 2026, according to the County of Maui Department of Environmental Management.

For the first time since 2022, the County of Maui is planning to offer approximately $301.8 million in General Obligation (GO) bonds for public sale to fund key projects. The planned sale reflects the County’s excellent financial standing, according to the County Department of Finance.

Sewer service is now active at 183 West Maui lots from Dickenson Street to Shaw Street, makai of the Honoapiʻilani Highway in Lahaina.

Sewer service status was recently amended for several properties in West Maui, making service active for several lots near Kopili St. and Puiki Place, as well as one lot near the Kuhua St. and Lahainaluna Road intersection.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency reflected upon a challenging year marked by the Aug. 8 wildfires disaster. FEMA administrators say major recovery projects highlight the community’s resilience and the role of FEMA in supporting rebuilding efforts.

The County of Maui Department of Environmental Management’s Wastewater Reclamation Division announced that it has amended the Sewer Service Status from “red,” which indicates a property does not currently have active sewer service, to “green,” meaning the sewer service is active for a property, in the following areas: Near Puʻunoa Place and Ala Moana Street near the Jodo Mission; and south of Lahainaluna Road near Paunau Street.

The US Environmental Protection Agency recently completed its Drinking Water and Wastewater mission in Lahaina as part of a multi-agency emergency response to the 2023 Maui wildfires. This mission is helping the County of Maui restore drinking water and wastewater services to the community in the wildfire-impacted areas of Lahaina.

Repairs and installations on County of Maui’s Lahainaluna Road between Honoapiʻilani Highway and Lahaina Bypass will begin in the next several weeks to prepare for the reopening of Lahainaluna Road in August, the County’s Office of Recovery announced.

Wastewater may be disposed of at Sewer Pump Station No. 1 on Halawai Drive, next to the Lahaina Wastewater Reclamation Facility on Honoapiʻilani Highway. 

Earthjustice officials said they are asking to extend the deadline to Aug. 14 for public comment on Maui County’s proposal to reduce the amount of treated sewage entering the ocean from injection wells at the Lahaina Wastewater Treatment Plant due to the Lahaina wildfire.

Environmental groups on Maui are studying a draft permit by Maui County that proposes using more treated water from its Lahaina Wastewater Treatment Plant for irrigation, which would reduce ocean pollution.

A water conservation advisory has been extended for West Maui customers as crews continue ongoing construction at the Lahaina Wastewater Treatment Facility. 

Maui water customers from Puamana to Kapalua are asked to conserve water while repairs are made to a clarifier unit at the Lahaina Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The US Supreme Court has granted Maui County’s petition to hear its ongoing West Maui injection well case. 

The public is advised to stay out if the coastal waters north of Māla Boat Ramp in West Maui due to a wastewater spill originating from the Lahaina Wastewater Pump Station.

The wastewater flowed from a manhole located at the intersection of Lahainaluna Road and Kalena Street, along Lahainaluna Road, into a storm drain on Pauoa Street.

All water consumers in Wailuku, Kahului, Kīhei, Wailea, Mākena, Māʻalaea, and Pāʻia areas are asked to continue water conservation due to damage to the ground water source at ʻĪao tunnel and to the ʻĪao surface water intake.

The Lahaina Water Treatment Plant is not operating due to heavy rain. As a result, the Maui County Department of Water Supply is asking all water consumers in Lahaina to immediately take measures to conserve water until further notice and to avoid any unnecessary water use.

A wastewater overflow of approximately 222 gallons occurred on Monday, May 9, 2016, at the intersection of Ilikahi Street and Alio Street in Lahaina.

Under the settlement, the County may appeal these rulings, but, if the rulings are upheld, it must implement the $2.5 million projects to divert and reuse the wastewater.
