While thousands of wildfire survivors remain displaced, Maui County Council members heard Tuesday a proposal for the state to purchase the former 216-room Maui Sun Hotel property in central Kīhei and convert it into long-term affordable workforce housing and a public prekindergarten facility.

During his visit, US Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg provided updates on key infrastructure projects, including critical investments in the Honoapiʻilani Highway. He visited West Maui as part of the administrationʻs efforts to reaffirm its commitment to wildfire recovery in Lahaina.

Funding has been secured for the third and final phase of the Hale O Piʻikea affordable, mixed-use rental housing community in Kīhei. The 223-unit development aims to provide quality, affordable housing options for individuals and families at or below 60% of the Area Median Income.

The County of Maui released further details about a $25 million federal grant announced earlier this week that will fund the proposed Līloa Drive Extension. The work is part of the first phase of a north segment of the long-discussed Kīhei North-South Collector Road.

A federal grant of $25,000,000 has been secured for the Līloa Drive extension in Kīhei on Maui as part of Biden-Harris Administration’s Investing in America Agenda. The project will extend Līloa Drive by 2,900 lineal feet and notes the addition of two more roundabouts to the South Maui community.

A brush fire in Kīhei is now contained at 1.5 acres. Mop-up operations were already underway at around 3:30 p.m.

A flash flood watch remains in effect for all islands until 6 p.m. today. Although a warning was lifted, road and park closures continue.

A Maui man was arrested and charged after he allegedly threw a large rock through the driver’s window of a passing motorist in Kīhei.

A juvenile was arrested by police at the scene of a brush fire in Kīhei on Sunday, on suspicion of arson, and was later released to the custody of their parents

Maui firefighters doused a small grass fire in a field to the north of the Kīhei Recycling and Redemption Center on East Welakahao Road on Tuesday night.

There are several road improvement projects that begin this week on Maui. Both projects will involve closing down one lane and contra-flowing traffic around construction work during weekdays. The Maui County Department of Public Works is advising motorists of the following road improvement projects in Central and South Maui.

A one-way traffic pattern will be temporarily implemented on one South Maui street because of ongoing roundabout construction. Starting on Monday, January 30, 2012, traffic on Piikea Avenue will only flow in the makai bound (downhill) direction.
