The County of Maui released further details about a $25 million federal grant announced earlier this week that will fund the proposed Līloa Drive Extension. The work is part of the first phase of a north segment of the long-discussed Kīhei North-South Collector Road.

“The fact that they would ask for funding to cover the plan and design for the grade-separated crossing instead of funding the entire project will set us back another five years,” said Sen. McKelvey.  “This is unconscionable, considering this school has been in the works for the past ten years. It is a travesty that this money was taken from our children and used to fund a DOT project when they have their own budget,” he said.

On Friday, Feb. 10 when work concludes at 3:30 p.m., the contractor will open all lanes through the roundabout. There will be two lanes open in each direction through the roundabout. The right turn lane in and out of Kūlanihākoʻi Street will be closed during daytime work hours from 7 a.m to 3:30 p.m. and re-open at close of business each day.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation today announced the cancellation of the closure on Piʻilani Highway due to weather. 

After roadwork this week, there are now two lanes open in the southbound (Mākena bound) direction and one lane open in the northbound (Kahului bound) direction. Traffic was slow midday today when approaching the roundabout in the single northbound lane.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation issued a notice today to Maui motorists of a nighttime, full closure of Piʻilani Highway between Kaonoulu Street and Piʻikea Avenue, scheduled from 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, through 5 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022.

Highway closures and speed reductions on the Piʻilani Highway in Kīhei are planned in conjunction with roundabout construction.

The $3.15 million project broke ground at the end of April and was completed within three months, five months ahead of schedule. The project was initially set to be completed at the end of this year.

The Maui Lani Roundabout will open earlier than planned, by July 30, if not sooner, according to Rowena Dagdag-Andaya, Director of the Maui Department of Public Works who spoke at an afternoon press briefing on Monday.

Construction work on the Maui Lani roundabout project will begin Monday, April 27, at the intersection of Maui Lani Parkway and Kamehameha Avenue in Kahului, the County of Maui Department of Public Works announced this afternoon.

What’s the estimated length of time to construct the Maui Lani roundabout?

With school rush hours and commuters taking the shortcut to the highway, the traffic gets very backed up.

A grand opening and blessing ceremony was held today for the first county-owned roundabout on Maui. The new Kihei roundabout, located at the intersection of Piikea Avenue and Liloa Drive, is also the first full sized roundabout on Maui, that can accommodate both truck and county bus traffic.

The closure will be in effect around the clock for a period of four to eight weeks beginning on Monday along Liloa Drive from the Piikea Avenue intersection to the Kauhaa Street intersection.

The county will use a rendering and a demonstration video in an effort to educate motorists on proper use, prior to the Lipoa Street roundabout becoming operational at the end of March.

Maui Motorists are advised of several road work projects planned this month in Kula, Kihei and Wailuku.

The roundabout project is estimated to cost $1.9 million and will take about 270 days to complete.
