Voices of recovery: Leaders reflect on two-year anniversary since the Maui wildfires

The strength of community and the dedication of first responders were highlighted Friday on the two-year anniversary of the 2023 Maui wildfires at the Kuhinia Maui Midday Gathering on the front lawn of Kalana O Maui County building in Wailuku.

Council to hold Lahaina public hearing and special meetings in December

Maui Council Chair Alice L. Lee announced that the Maui County Council will hold a public hearing Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Lahaina Civic Center Social Hall on a proposed ordinance for the Kahoma Village project, where five residential buildings were destroyed in the Aug. 8, 2023, wildfires. Lee said the council will also hold special meetings Dec. 13 and 23 in the Council Chamber to discuss bills amending land-use and development standards for the Honua‘ula development—a 670-acre, multiuse housing project in South Maui. County officials offer details on resident, contractor access in the impact zone

County of Maui officials provided updated details regarding resident and contractor access in the Lahaina impact zone, previously called the disaster zone. For residents with vehicle passes who have a temporary building permit for a temporary dwelling (such as an ADU, camper, trailer, etc.) and are living onsite while they are rebuilding their permanent home within the impact zone, access is 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Lahaina wildfire cases could get a trial date as soon as Nov. 18

Parties to cases involving the Lahaina wildfire disaster could see their first trial date as soon as Nov. 18, 2024 before Judge Peter Cahill. The date was set during a status conference held Friday before a room full of attorneys representing various interests in the case.

Portion of Lahaina removed from Unsafe Water Advisory

The Maui Department of Water Supply amended the Unsafe Water Advisory for Lahaina to remove area L-4D. Water serving buildings and homes in areas L-4D is declared safe for unrestricted use effective Jan. 19, 2023.

Teams remove 10,000 gallons of petroleum, adjudicates 65 vessels from Lahaina Harbor

State and federal responders have completed recovery and removal operations in or adjacent to Lahaina Harbor. The US Army Corps of Engineers will conduct final disposition of fire-damaged vessels and incident-generated debris removed during harbor operations.

Portion of Lahaina removed from Unsafe Water Advisory area

County of Maui Department of Water Supply amended the Unsafe Water Advisory for Lahaina to remove L-4C, an area surrounding Safeway that moves north along Front Street to the Old Chart House in Lahaina. Water serving buildings and homes in areas L-4C on the Maui Recovers website is declared safe for unrestricted use effective today, Dec. 21, 2023.

Maui Relief TANF Program outreach for noncitizens to be held Dec. 10

An outreach event to reach noncitizen families with dependent children, who could be eligible for Maui Relief TANF Program benefits, will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 10, in Lahaina.

Mortgage Assistance event this Friday and Saturday in West Maui

The Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs Division of Financial Institutions is hosting a Mortgage Assistance Event to provide support for homeowners and business owners that have been impacted by the Maui wildfires.  The event will be on Friday, Oct. 27 and Saturday, Oct. 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa (200 Nohea Kai Drive, Lahaina, Hawaiʻi 96761) in the Monarchy Ballrooms 1 and 2—formerly the site of the American Red Cross Family Assistance Center.

Nonprofits have one week left to request FEMA Public Assistance

Nonprofit organizations, including houses of worship, that had losses caused by the Maui County wildfires and high winds have one week – until Wednesday, Oct. 25 – to submit a Request for Public Assistance from FEMA.
