The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation and its food and beverage concessionaire partner HMSHost celebrated the grand opening Waialua Bar & Cafe in Terminal 1 of the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport.

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation reminds travelers to give themselves extra time at the airport this Thanksgiving holiday season, as officials prepare for a 10% increase in passenger volume at the state’s five busiest airports – The Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL), Kahului Airport (OGG), Līhu‘e Airport (LIH), Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keāhole (KOA) and Hilo International Airport (ITO).

Kahului International Airport (OGG) is expected to see one of the nation’s steepest surges in passenger traffic this holiday season, according to a new analysis of Transportation Security Administration data by Luxury Link.

Maui’s Kahului Airport has managed to deal with the federal government shutdown with minimal impacts, but that is about to change with the FAA mandating flights to be cut at major airports and with transportation employees about to lose a second paycheck.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation notifies the public of nightly paving work fronting the Kahului Airport Terminal beginning Wednesday, Nov. 5 through the morning of Saturday, Nov. 8.

Aloha Aviation, a free and inspiring event for middle and high school students interested in aviation, will take place on Monday, September 29, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Kahului Airport conference rooms.

The closure will be from 10 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 20 to 5 a.m., Sunday, Sept. 21. Haleakalā Highway on the west side of the Hāna Highway intersection will be fully closed to traffic. Those needing to access the airport will need to head to the closest entrance through Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho Way (Route 3800).

Due to baggage screening delays at the Kahului Airport (OGG), the state Department of Transportation is advising anyone traveling with checked luggage to arrive at the airport at least an hour and a half prior to their scheduled departure time.

The Aircraft Rescue Fire-Fighting (ARFF) station at Kahului Airport has a new Fire Chief with a familiar name. Matthew Pires, 37, becomes the youngest Fire Chief in history at the Kahului Airport Rescue Fire-Fighting station, according to family members. He follows in the footsteps of his dad, Scott “Pomai” Pires who was Maui Airport Fire Chief for almost 10 years, retiring in May 2022. 

The state Department of Transportation conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for the $46 million Kahului Airport South TSA Checkpoint Project. The project is expected to be completed in December 2026.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation advises motorists that a portion of Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho Way (Route 3800) at Kahului Airport will be closed nightly on Tuesday, May 27 and Wednesday, May 28, for safety improvements.

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation will conduct a meeting to discuss a partial closure of the North Shore Greenway bike and pedestrian pathway adjacent to Kahului Airport for soil removal.

The new space, which serves Gates 1 to 15 in the airport’s southern concourse, was constructed by connecting two existing waiting areas, each approximately 6,000 square feet, and enclosing the open-air walkway that separated them. The result is a spacious 17,000-square-feet, air-conditioned area that can seat 460 passengers. In addition, a newly created garden deck provides an outdoor seating option for Kahului passengers.

The Kahului Airport may also see an increase in travelers due to the Maui Invitational, which runs Nov. 25 through 27 at the Lahaina Civic Center.

CLEAR has announced four new enrollment locations, including one at Kahului Airport, allowing consumers to enroll or renew in TSA PreCheck. Formerly, IDEMIA Wailuku was the only location on Maui where one could enroll in TSA PreCheck.

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation notifies the public that a training exercise will be conducted at the Kahului Airport from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 20. The Kahului Airport Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighters will conduct an emergency training exercise that tests the response to a simulated aircraft incident on a Boeing 737 Max 8 aircraft. The exercise is a requirement by the Federal Aviation Administration.

Mauiʻs Kahului Airport (OGG) will receive $14.3 million in AIP supplemental grant funds for apron light replacement for enhanced safety. Itʻs one of four airport projects identified in Hawaiʻi to improve operations.

As of Aug. 28, 2024, REAL ID-compliant Hawaiʻi driver’s licenses and state identification cards can be added to iPhone and Apple Watch, the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation announced.

The airline communications systems impacted by a global technology outage are back online. Some flights have been able to depart Hawai‘i airports, while others were cancelled or rescheduled. Passengers should check with their airline prior to going to the airport and should expect delays.
