UH study: Meth poisoning leading cause for fatal overdoses in older Hawaiʻi residents
A new study by researchers at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Center on Aging finds that methamphetamine poisoning is the leading cause of fatal overdoses among midlife and older adults in Hawai‘i. The research was published in the August 2024 issue of Hawaiʻi Journal of Health and Social Welfare.
Honolulu City Council member introduces bill to cut down on opioid-related deaths
Following the Federal Drug Administration’s approval of the lifesaving opioid overdose reversal medication “naloxone” as an over-the-counter medication this morning, Honolulu City Councilmember Tyler Dos Santos-Tam introduced Bill 28, which requires certain bars, nightclubs, and other high-risk venues to maintain doses of naloxone spray on site in case of an overdose.

Police say this incident was the first instance this year in which Maui police officers have used Narcan. The Maui Police Department’s first documented use of the kit in the field was in June 2018.
