Firefighters and Ocean Safety personnel rescued two kayakers, a 37-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, from waters off of Pāpalaua Beach Park in West Maui, Saturday morning.

Beginning Saturday, May 24, 2025, access to the shoreline on the north and south ends of Lahaina Harbor will be made available for recreational, noncommercial purposes, the County of Maui Office of Recovery announced.

The $9,909,551 Transformational Habitat Restoration and Coastal Resilience Grant will be used to support a comprehensive approach to restoring and protecting West Maui reefs, particularly the 1,000-acre leeward Pāpalaua to Olowalu reef. It is considered globally significant and plays a vital role in coastal resilience, in reducing shoreline wave energy, and moderating coastal flooding.

Hui O Ka Wai Ola increased its response to the Lahaina wildfires by launching four additional coastal water testing sites in West Maui (Māla Tavern, Māla Ramp, Papalaua Street, and Lahaina Harbor) and by hiring the organization’s first Fire Response Team Lead.

The 939-acre Olowalu reef has been identified as one of the most essential reefs to protect on the island of Maui, but issues from both the land and sea threaten this vital reef system. Maui police are responding to a motor vehicle accident along the Honoapiʻilani Highway near Papalaua (between Mile 11-12). The pickup truck reportedly hit a tree and flipped over. The vehicle was off to the side of the road. The incident was reported at around 6:09 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2020.

County officials say wave action and saltwater spray have deteriorated street elements on the makai side of Front Street in two locations: between Dickenson Street and Lahainaluna Road and between Papalaua and Baker streets.

West Maui parks from Papalaua to DT Fleming Beach Park will remain closed until a safety assessment has been completed. A high surf warning remains in effect.

Lahainaluna Road is closed between Honoapiʻilani Highway and Wainee Street due to a motor vehicle collision. The southbound lanes of the highway are closed between Lahainaluna Road and Papalaua Avenue as well as the northbound lanes between Lahainaluna Road and Dickenson Street.

All South Maui parks as well as Baldwin and Kanahā beach parks will be closed Sunday due to a severe winter storm forecast to impact the entire state.

Papalaua Wayside Park will be closed for two weeks for conduct clean-up work following a series of complaints about illegal camping in the area.

Three visitors were rescued from waters off of Papalaua Beach Park in West Maui on Wednesday afternoon after being swept out in choppy seas and 25-30 mph winds.
