Kayakers rescued from waters off Pāpalaua Beach Park

Firefighters and Ocean Safety personnel rescued two kayakers, a 37-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, from waters off of Pāpalaua Beach Park in West Maui, Saturday morning.

County announces access for noncommercial shoreline recreation near Lahaina Harbor starting Saturday

Beginning Saturday, May 24, 2025, access to the shoreline on the north and south ends of Lahaina Harbor will be made available for recreational, noncommercial purposes, the County of Maui Office of Recovery announced.

$10M NOAA grant for ‘Summit to Sea’ project to protect West Maui reefs

The $9,909,551 Transformational Habitat Restoration and Coastal Resilience Grant will be used to support a comprehensive approach to restoring and protecting West Maui reefs, particularly the 1,000-acre leeward Pāpalaua to Olowalu reef. It is considered globally significant and plays a vital role in coastal resilience, in reducing shoreline wave energy, and moderating coastal flooding.

Hui O Ka Wai Ola adds four new coastal water testing sites in Lahaina 

Hui O Ka Wai Ola increased its response to the Lahaina wildfires by launching four additional coastal water testing sites in West Maui (Māla Tavern, Māla Ramp, Papalaua Street, and Lahaina Harbor) and by hiring the organization’s first Fire Response Team Lead.

Traffic Advisory: Honoapi‘ilani at Papalaua (Mile 11-12)

Maui police are responding to a motor vehicle accident along the Honoapiʻilani Highway near Papalaua (between Mile 11-12). The pickup truck reportedly hit a tree and flipped over. The vehicle was off to the side of the road. The incident was reported at around 6:09 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2020.
