Mayor Richard Bissen announced the selection of John Smith, a leader with the County of Maui’s Department of Public Works, to serve as the new administrator of the County’s Office of Recovery. County officials say Smith has been instrumental in leading infrastructure restoration efforts following the recent wildfires. In his new capacity, he will now oversee the County’s comprehensive recovery efforts.

Lori Tsuhako was sworn in today as County of Maui Director of Human Concerns, a new department that launched July 1, 2024. Also today, Jessica Crouse was named the Deputy Director of Human Concerns, and Paul Barany was sworn in as the Deputy Director of Public Works. Deputy directors are not subject to council approval. 

The meeting will include updates on the West Maui Greenway, improvements to Honokōwai Playground and Lahaina Recreation Center and land maintenance of county land along Honoapiʻilani Highway.

The intersection of Pūlehu Road and Hansen Road will be converted to an all-way stop, with stop signs posted at all four entry points, effective on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2022. Once the stop signs are installed, all motorists will be required to stop before proceeding through the intersection. 

The plan sets a course for transportation planning in Kīhei, one of Maui County’s fastest-growing communities, and it takes into consideration the ground transportation needs of everyone – keiki to kupuna – and of pedestrians, bicyclists, bus commuters and motorists.

Mayor Michael Victorino announced today that he has appointed Steve Welling as deputy director of the Department of Public Works.

Is there a planning goal for county roadways to include sidewalks for all new roadway projects and when refurbishing existing urban streets?

Motorists should expect delays such as alternating single-lane traffic, detours and full closures between 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. from May 1-31, 2018.

Contractors with the Department of Public Works will be resurfacing Lower Honoapiʻilani Road from Omaikai Place to Nāpilihau Street over the next several months. 

A $3.7 million roadway stabilization project on the Kahekili Highway in Kahakuloa begins next month to address deteriorating conditions.

Volunteers will paint awareness messages of “No Dumping – Drains to Ocean” at storm drain inlets on and around High, Main, and Market streets in Wailuku.

Crews will be replacing the traffic signal controls at the intersection of Papa Avenue and Onehee Street on Thursday, Feb. 18, 2016 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The Maui Department of Public Works will be closing down a portion of Central Avenue in Wailuku for one day only on Nov. 23, 2015.

The new edition will focus on the county’s plans to further improve roadways and other infrastructure currently maintained by the Department of Public Works.

Repairs began on March 27 and were completed this week, enabling residents to once again drive in and out of the area with their vehicles. The Maui Department of Public Works completed emergency repairs at the Hanawana Land Bridge in East Maui after severe rains washed out a portion of the road on March 9.

The stretch of roadway slated for repairs includes the segment between mile markers 15 and 16. The section of road is located on the north side of Waihali Gulch, just north of Kahakuloa Village on Conservation Lands that overlook Kahakuloa Bay.

Public Works officials on Maui will be the featured guests on the upcoming edition of “Your County with Mayor Arakwa.”

The public works department will be removing stop signs on East Waiko Road to ease traffic flow in the area.
