Traffic Advisory: Utility pole severed on Kaʻahumanu Ave. fronting Maui Mall

Update: Kaʻahumanu East bound lanes are now open. There is no right turn onto Kaʻahumanu from Puʻunēnē Avenue. The right lane is closed fronting Maui Mall and there is no left turn into Maui Mall for Wailuku bound traffic.

Utility work to impact traffic on Puʻunēnē Avenue, April 28

Hawaiian Electric crews will be removing retired streetlights along Puʻunēnē Avenue between Wākea Avenue to E. Kauaʻi Street in Kahului on Tuesday, April 28 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. No service interruptions are planned for this work.

Partial Puʻunēnē Avenue closure announced for traffic signal programming

The closure will be nightly from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. the next day on Monday, March 30 and Tuesday, March 31. The last closure will open at 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1.

Maui traffic advisories, Sunday, March 22: Multiple road closed due to flooding, sinkhole in Lahaina

Travel on Hāna Highway into East Maui is limited to emergency vehicles, essential workers and local traffic due to ongoing repair work and dangerous conditions. MPD has checkpoint enforcement from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily on Hāna Highway. Haleakalā National Park’s summit remains closed, according to the National Park Service. The public is urged not to attempt travel into these areas until further notice. Below is an ongoing list of traffic advisories:

Maui lane closures for the week of March 21 – March 27

 The state Department of Transportation has several road projects planned across the island this week. All projects are weather permitting.

Update: Traffic signal temporary repairs completed for the intersection of Puʻunēnē Avenue and Kamehameha Avenue

The traffic signal at the Puʻunēnē Avenue (Route 3500) and Kamehameha Avenue intersection is fully functioning. Interim repairs were made in the morning on Monday, March 16. 

Puʻunēnē Avenue night closures to switch over traffic signals

Due to the inclement weather, night work scheduled for this week has been postponed to the week of Feb. 17-20. 

Traffic signal work to close Puʻunēnē Avenue at night, Feb. 2-6

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) is advising highway users that there will be an overnight closure of Puʻunēnē Avenue (Route 3500) next week, from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. to install new traffic signals.

Puʻunēnē Ave. between Papa and Kūihelani to be closed nightly beginning Monday, Sept. 8

Motorists are advised that all lanes on Puʻunēnē Avenue (Route 3500), between Papa Avenue and Kūihelani Highway (Route 380) will be closed nightly beginning, Monday, Sept. 8 for utility crossing and pavement reconstruction work.

Update: Roving single lane closure on Kūihelani Highway for pavement striping work

Striping work from Aug. 27 to 29 along with work from Sept. 3 to 5 has been postponed. Work will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 2. An update will be provided once the remaining work is scheduled.

Lane closures to be altered on Puʻunēnē Avenue for affordable housing project

Motorists are advised that the 24/7 lane closures for sewer line work on South Puʻunēnē Avenue (Route 3500) in Kahului will be changed on Tuesday, Aug. 12.

Day and night closures on Puʻunēnē Avenue for affordable housing project

Beginning nightly this Sunday July 13, all lanes of South Puʻunēnē Avenue will be closed between the intersection with West Kamehameha Avenue to Hololeʻa Street, adjacent to Jim Falk Chrysler Dodge Jeep and Ram.

Puʻunēnē closed in both directions between Wākea and Papa for night work, May 15-16

Puʻunēnē Avenue in both directions from Wākea Avenue to Papa Avenue will be closed for restriping work from 9 p.m., Thursday, May 15, to 5 a.m., Friday, May 16.

Roving lane closures on Puʻunēnē Avenue for soil sample drilling, Jan. 10

Motorists on Maui are advised of potential traffic delays due to roving lane closures on Puʻunēnē Avenue (Route 3500) on Friday, Jan. 10, for drilling of soil samples for the Puʻunēnē Avenue improvements project.

List: Maui lane closures through Jan. 5, 2025

A Holiday Lane Closure Restriction runs from Monday, Dec. 23, through Sunday, Jan. 5. Only closures with demonstrated need (e.g., necessary for safety or to avoid lengthy construction delays) have been approved and are on this list. There will be no lane closures on Wednesday, Jan. 1, in observance of New Year’s Day.

Closures at Kahului intersection for early morning work Tuesday and Thursday

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation advises highway users that single lanes will be closed at the intersection of Puʻunēnē Avenue (Route 3500), Kūihelani Highway (Route 380), Maui Veterans Highway (Route 311) and Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho Way (Route 3800), on Tuesday, Oct. 22 and Thursday, Oct. 24, from 3 a.m. to 7 a.m.

Puʻunēnē Ave. improvements subject of public meeting, Oct. 10

The project, to widen Puʻunēnē Ave. from two to four lanes between Wākea Ave. and Kūihelani Highway, is expected to begin in January 2025. Multimodal and safety improvements planned as part of this project include: a contiguous paved shoulder, new sidewalks on both sides of Puʻunēnē Ave., a landscaped median between Puʻukani St. and Mayor Elmer F. Cravalho Way, two noise walls, enhanced street lighting, new signage and updated drainage and storm water management. Construction of these improvements is expected to run through Spring 2026.

Public informational meeting on Puʻunēnē Ave. improvements, July 11

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation will host a public informational meeting to discuss the planned improvements to Puʻunēnē Ave. (Route 3500) between Wākea Ave. and Kūihelani Highway (Route 380). The meeting takes place on Thursday, July 11, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Maui Waena Intermediate School in Kahului.
