South Kīhei Road reopens three weeks after cleanup from severe winter storm
County of Maui Department of Public Works reopened the northern section of South Kīhei Road on Friday evening, Feb. 21, 2025, after finishing major clean up and repairs to the roadway after a severe winter storm.
Flooding of Piʻilani Hwy. in Kaupō; downed power lines on Makawao Ave.; flooding on S. Kihei Road at Ohukai; Landslide at Honokōhau
Piʻilani Highway is closed between Mile 29 and 31 in Kaupō due to flooding. A portion of Makawao Ave. is closed due to two large trees that have fallen and downed power lines block both lanes. Maui police have closed South Kīhei Road from Ohukai to Kīhei Bay Vista at 715 South Kīhei Road, due to heavy flooding. Crews are working to remove a landslide blocking the northbound lane of the Honoapiʻilani Highway at Mile 35.5 and 36 in Honokōhau.
Maui fire personnel rescue drivers from floodwaters in South Maui
Rain and flooding resulted in rescues and road closures on Maui Tuesday morning. Around 8:45 a.m., Maui Fire Department’s Air One rescued two people from their vehicle, which was trapped in fast rising floodwaters along South Kīhei Road near Kaonoulu Street. Another three people in vehicles stalled in floodwaters were taken to safety on foot by fire department personnel.
South Kīhei Road work nears completion following December storm
A second Maui County project on South Kīhei Road is in two segments: from Līpoa Street to Auhana Road and from Keonekai Road to Kilohana Drive. Until July, two lanes of traffic will be allowed, with one in each direction. Later in July, road paving work will begin, and alternating single-lane traffic will be implemented.
UPDATE/OPEN: Flooding Results in Road Closures in South Maui
South Kīhei Road is now OPEN as of 8 a.m. It was closed earlier this morning between North Kīhei and Uwapo Roads due to flooding.
Flood Mitigation Continues on South Kīhei Road
The County of Maui Department of Public Works has closed South Kīhei Road from Ohukai Road to Kaonoulu Street due to flooding.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. on November 18, with presentations on last year’s flooding and an overview of the region’s watershed.
