The new fiscal year begins today, July 1. “Our housing crisis, exacerbated by the fires, remains a top priority for all elected officials and administrators,” said Council Chair Alice Lee, pointing to a report that indicates more than 4,000 residents have already left Maui in search of housing elsewhere. “We must take care of and protect our families,” she said.

New cap creates “point-in-time freeze” on Maui TVRs; starts regulation on camper vans

In an ongoing effort to manage tourism, the Maui County Council passed Bill 159 Friday with a series of amendments that effectively caps transient accommodations and regulates camper van rentals on public property.

Updated Public Health Emergency Rules Related to Maui TVRs

Under the updated rules issued on July 31, 2020, no TVR may be designated as a quarantine location; however, new or intended residents may use a long-term rental for their 14-day mandatory quarantine. A long-term rental unit can be used only once as a quarantine location in any six-month period.

Maui TVRs Allowed to Restart on June 16, But Can Only Accommodate Individuals Not Subject to Quarantine

Maui Mayor Michael Victorino announced this afternoon that Transient Vacation Rentals on Maui will be allowed to operate starting on Tuesday, June 16, but can only accommodate individuals who are not subject to the 14-day quarantine.
