Maui police launch distracted driving awareness campaign, April 3-14
Motorists on Maui will see heightened traffic enforcement April 3-14, 2023, as the MPD Traffic Division takes part in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s U Drive. U Text. U Pay. Distracted Driving awareness enforcement event.
“U Drive U Text U Pay” campaign against distracted driving runs from April 17-23
To date, Maui police have issued 647 citations for Distracted Driving compared to 359 citations issued this same time last year. The heightened enforcement runs from April 17-23.
421 Citations Issued During 5-Day Distracted Driving Enforcement on Maui
The citations included: 177 for use of a mobile electronic device while driving; 173 seatbelt violations; 1 child restraint violation; four citations for pickup truck restrictions; 38 moving violations; and 28 citations for other violations.
Maui Police Launch Distracted Driving Awareness Campaign April 5-11
To date the Maui Police Department has issued 359 citations for Distracted Driving compared to 329 citations issued this same time last year. In CY 2020 MPD issued a total of 1730 distracted driving citations.

Transportation officials say distracted driving is dangerous and claimed 3,166 lives nationwide in 2017 alone.

The campaign is part of the national “U Drive. U Text. U Pay.” enforcement campaign that runs from April 1-30, 2018.
Maui Police Campaign Nets 3,779 Citations, 769 for Distracted Driving
During the one month of enforcement, Officers issued a total of 3,779 citations. Of those, 769 citations were for Mobile Electronic Device Violations (Distracted Driving), 23 were issued to School or Construction Zones. Other citations included are, Speeding 341, Seatbelt 180 and other violations totaling to 2,466.
