The County of Maui Department of Parks and Recreation on Friday announced that repairs and beautification activities at Wahikuli Wayside Park in Lahaina are planned for the next three weeks.

The US Environmental Protection Agency will begin clearing and inspecting sanitary sewer lines on Honoapiʻilani Highway and Keawe Street in Lahaina starting the week of Feb. 26. Department officials say work will take place between Leialiʻi Parkway and Keawe Street (from Wahikuli Wayside Park to Safeway on Honoapiʻilani Highway and from Minit Stop to Honoapiʻilani Highway on Keawe Street).

The Holiday Lane Closure Restriction runs from Monday, Dec. 18, through Tuesday, Jan. 2. Only closures with demonstrated need (e.g., necessary for safety or to avoid lengthy construction delays) have been approved and are on this list. There will be no lane closures on Monday, Dec. 25 in observance of Christmas Day.

The state Department of Transportation will be conducting road work this week that will result in lane closures at various locations. Lane closure schedules may change at any time without further notice.  All projects are weather permitting. 

The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, County of Maui, and the Federal Highway Administration is installing an emergency stormwater capture system in Lahaina to reduce the environmental impact from silt, ash and other disaster debris potentially entering storm drainage systems.

Underwater search efforts for human remains that began last Saturday, continued today in near-shore waters near the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor and along the Front Street breakwater. 

Update: A head-on crash early Wednesday morning claimed the life of three people. Maui police have since identified all individuals involved. Police say speed is believed to be a factor in the fiery crash.

The north entrance to Wahikuli Wayside Park in West Maui will be closed Monday, April 17, 2023, due to a main waterline break.

Three beach parks in West Maui–Launiupoko, Ukumehame, and Wahikuli Wayside Park–had the lowest adaptation potential to withstand impacts of sea level rise, based on five indicators of vulnerability.

The Honoapiʻilani Highway is now open in both directions as of 5:51 p.m. Maui police remind motorists to drive with patience and expect delays as traffic resumes its normal flow.
