This fall, the University of Hawaiʻi Maui College is launching an Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Specialist Certificate.

The County of Maui Department of Environmental Management this week notified the US Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Health, reporting October 2016 findings from wastewater test samples of the presence of nitrophenol. The chemical is a metabolite of methyl parathion, the active ingredient in Penncap-M, the same banned pesticide identified in the recent Monsanto case on Maui.

The Sierra Club Maui Group and Maui Tomorrow are challenging Maui County and Anaergia Services’ proposed sludge farm and power plant along the Kahului shoreline by filing a lawsuit in Maui’s Environmental Court on Thursday.

An estimated 1,237 gallons of wastewater overflowed from a manhole on the Hāna Highway in Kahului on Sunday morning.

An equipment malfunction resulted in a 100,000 gallon wastewater overflow in Kahului on Friday, March 13, county officials said.

All irrigation systems and other non-essential uses of water should be shut off until further notice. Water and wastewater systems may be compromised if electricity cannot be supplied to power the pumps and motors in the distribution and transmission systems.

The proposed shoreline protection extension of the Wailuku-Kahului Wastewater Reclamation Facility will be the subject of a public hearing scheduled for January 14, 2014.

A sewage discharge detected on Wednesday morning, Oct. 30, in Kāʻanapali is being attributed to an accidental connection of a temporary sewer line to a storm water drain.

An estimated 8,366 gallons of waste water overflowed in an easement area next to the baseball field on Kanaloa Avenue in Wailuku, county officials said.

The spill occurred near the intersection of South Kīhei Road and Waimāhaʻihaʻi Street at around 2:05 a.m. Wastewater flowed from the pump station site to the grassy area in the adjacent lot occupied by the Kīhei Fire Station.

“Water should be used for health and sanitation purposes only as a precaution in case water or wastewater systems fail,” said county authorities in a press release. “All other uses should be delayed until after the storm passes,” officials said.

A second wastewater overflow in less than a month was reported on Kenolio Road fronting the Southpointe Apartments in Kīhei.

County officials say the “tests results indicate that no wastewater reached the ocean as a result of the May 7, 2013 overflow.”

A broken force main in West Maui on Tuesday, May 7, resulted in temporary calls for water conservation, and the planned overnight closure of beaches from Māla Wharf to Hanakaʻōʻō.
