Charges filed in case of monk seal pup death

In accordance with the Act and NOAA’s Policy for the Assessment of Civil Administrative Penalties and Permit Sanctions, both individuals were jointly assessed a $20,000 civil penalty in the case of an attack by unleashed dogs causing the death of the Hawaiian monk seal pup. 

Applications now open for Kaulunani Community Forestry Grants

Hawai‘i communities and organizations are encouraged to apply for Kaulunani forestry grants that promote trees in places where people live, work, learn and play. The DLNR Kaulunani Urban & Community Forestry Program is providing support to entities that promote the protection and enhancement of urban and community forests in their community spaces. 

Pōhākea public land purchase: 250 acres protected in perpetuity at Māʻalaea Mauka

A community-led preservation effort safeguards Pōhākea, protecting land, three operating wells and a 750,000-gallon water tank for public benefit. The public purchase enables the reduction of recurrent wildfire risks, enhancement of public access to hiking trails, protection of cultural and scenic resources, and reduction of stormwater runoff and erosion impacting Māʻalaea Bay.

1,000 invasive Albizia trees harvested to build FestPAC Hale Village

The DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife helped fell more than 1,000 invasive trees, mostly Albizia, to be used in building 28 hale for the Festival Village as part of the 13th Festival of Pacific Arts & Culture (FestPAC).

Three men cited for gear and net violations at ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve

Three Wailuku men were issued multiple citations within the ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve on May 21, at approximately 9:30 p.m. Officers recovered a total of 78 different fish. The men are scheduled to appear in Maui District Court on June 27 at 9 a.m.

Defueling of grounded ferry boat off Lahaina begins

Work began Monday afternoon to remove 2,500 gallons of fuel from a ferry boat that grounded just off Lahaina last week. The process of getting fuel, batteries, hazardous materials, and other items off the Maui Princess is expected to take a few days.  The boat broke from its mooring further offshore, last Thursday after a part reportedly failed.

Houseless man arrested during cleanup at Kahului Boat Harbor

Officers arrested a houseless man this morning on three charges during the second day of a cleanup operation at Kahului Boat Harbor. Authorities with the state Department of Land and Natural Resources say the man resisted arrest and attempted to flee. An officer used a taser to control the suspect and to take him into custody, according to department reports.

Baby monk seal arrives on May Day at Kaimana Beach

Early Wednesday morning, Kaiwi (RK96) pupped at Kaimana Beach. This is the third offspring she’s delivered at Kaimana. Her three other pups were born along her namesake—the Kaiwi Coast in East O’ahu.

The meeting will feature an update on Lahaina Harbor from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, an update on debris clearing from the US Army Corps of Engineers and information on the status of drinking water sampling from the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Kahului Harbor cleanup planned on May 2-3; includes removal of vehicles on May 6

Fifty-four trucks and cars, many inoperable, will be towed from the state’s Kahului Harbor on May 6, state officials announced. A team from the state Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, and officers from the DLNR Division of Conservation and Resources Enforcement placed notices on each of the vehicles on Monday. The notices warn owners that their car or truck is parked illegally in a state boating facility, which is a violation of one or more laws under Hawai‘i Administrative Rules. During yesterday’s posting, 27 people were also advised that the state and a contractor would be cleaning up the harbor on May 2 and 3.
